OVERVIEW
You’re a web developer, you say? All about web standards, too? We’ll bet you haven’t (willingly) worked with the Microsoft web platform in years (or ever). Well, we have a really nice surprise for you. It’s called IE10 (yes, we said “IE”). It’s built around the emerging W3C web platform standards and arguably the most standards-compliant browser out there. But that’s just the beginning. What if we told you that you could use those standards-based, web development chops you’ve honed over the years to create amazing and truly native experiences on Windows 8 with HTML/JavaScript Windows Store apps? Okay, you can stop laughing now. Because we’re serious. By the end of this session, you’ll realize that you can build amazing, immersive and truly native apps for Windows 8 using HTML, JavaScript and CSS. You’ll even learn how to start building them today (as in NOW). Interested? Thought you might be. We’ll see you at the session.
20. Windows Store statistics
• Close to half of the apps and games in the
Windows Store are built with HTML5
• The Game-to-App ratio in the Windows Store is
60/40
22. The best app and game experiences on Windows
8 are the ones that light up the unique features of
the platform. Think about:
• Adding contract support to your app
• Snap-mode
• A Live Tile
• Leverage the Modern UI (where appropriate)

Let’s put this topic into context…
You are here !!
Choose two or three of the many demos we have on the IE 10 testdrive site. Try to end up on a high/graphical note.. Like the touch demo..Ecmascript5http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/HTML5/TryStrict/Default.htmlFormshttp://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/HTML5/Forms/Default.htmlTouchhttp://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Graphics/TouchEffects/Web workershttp://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/HTML5/WebWorkerTest262/Default.html
Of course in Windows 8, we are adding more.. We will get into the details of these in the next few slides where we highlight most relevant ones

Implemented by jQuery, dojo, node.js, etc. Then returns another promise so you can chain them…

Show the navigation Show the WinJS.application object To see all of these, it is trivial to do a search on the solution for //DEMO:WinJS and you will be able to see areas to set breakpoints for discussion..
If you prefer to use your own library, you can. As long as your app is compliant with Metro SDK, you will be fine.. At build, we explicitly wrote a sample (finance) using jQuery… It works very well.. If you are bringing your own library, here is the advise that I can give you:Mix & Match works fine. WinJS does a lot of things well, such as simplifying the object model, wrappers for file system, implementing the promise pattern, etc.. Use WinJS for all of that.. Use your favorite library for everything else, but do try to adhere to the Metro UI and the Windows personality. Your users will appreciate it if you do..
