the 3rd leading lifestyle-related cause of death for
the nation. Excessive alcohol use is responsible for
2.3 million years of potential life lost (YPLL)
annually, or an average of about 30 years of
potential life lost for each death. In 2006, there
were more than 1.2 million emergency room visits
and 2.7 million physician office visits due to
excessive dri

**The Standard Measure of Alcohol**
In the United States, a standard drink is any drink
that contains 0.6 ounces (14.0 grams or 1.2
tablespoons) of pure alcohol. Generally, this
amount of pure alcohol is found in:

conditions. These immediate effects are most
often the result of binge drinking and include the

-- Violence, including intimate partner violence and
child maltreatment. About 35% of victims report
that offenders are under the influence of alcohol.7

child maltreatment and neglect cases, and is the
most frequent substance abused among these
parents.

hypertension.

Drinking is a problem if it causes trouble in your
relationships, in school, in social activities, or in
how you think and feel. If you are concerned that
either you or someone in your family might have a
drinking problem, consult your personal health

If you are drinking too much, you can improve your
life and health by cutting down. How do you know
if you drink too much? Read these questions and
answer "yes" or "no":
