Background & Introduction
I specialize in Integrating, Maintaining and Extending OSIsoft PI Systems having
Real Time SCADA inputs such as Siemens Spectrum Energy Management System (EMS).
I have a deep and broad Oracle SQL and PLSQL development background as well and
have been in the backend Oracle database of SCADA systems that underlie control
systems conducting analysis as well daily for several years. I have been at
Generation Asset Owner Companies such as PSEG, Exelon and NextEra Energy for
more than 6 years and in addition to that, have more than 4 years’ experience in
the Generation Department at PJM Interconnection, our Regional Transmission
Operator and Balancing Authority. PSEG and its units and roughly 1800 other
Generating Units in 15 states from NJ to NC to IL all participate in the PJM
Market. My strengths and my passion and what I enjoy most is Data Visualization
& Data Analysis and in combining Generation PI Data for example with other
business system data such as that from an Outage Management System (OMS),
Geographical Information System (GIS) or Financial / Markets based System having
to do with Locational Marginal Pricing (LMPs) to enhance Situational Awareness.
I have 16 years overall experience, 10 years being in the Electrical Power
Industry both at Generation Asset Owners such as PSE&G, Exelon, PECO & Next Era
Energy and RTO/ISO’s such as PJM Interconnection.
My functional roles within the industry include Generation Data Analyst, PI
Systems Analyst, PI Support Engineer, PI Systems Integrator, Database Developer,
and Software Developer.
PI Technical Highlights: PI Systems, PI Asset Framework (PI-AF), PI Interfaces
(PI-RDBMS, PI-UFL, PI-OPC, PI-DNP3, PI-to-PI), PI Web Parts, PI ACE Calculations
& PI-ACE Server, PI Coresight, PI Notifications (PI Alerts)
SCADA / Control Systems Technical Highlights: 3.5 years daily work using Siemens
Spectrum EMS (Energy Management System) including IMM (Siemens Network Model
Information Model Manager).I have done PI work associated with GE XA-21 EMS to
configure PI System for PECO (Exelon). I have a couple of years working with PI
Points having OPC, Modbus, Ovation and DNP3 Interface sources (RTU’s).
Generic I.T. Analyst / Database Technical Highlights: I have 15 years’
experience with SQL, my strongest being Oracle and Oracle PL/SQL, but I have
spent several years with both MSSQL and Sybase Transact SQL or ’T-SQL’
I am a database expert with Time Series Databases (OSIsoft PI), Relational
Databases (Oracle, MSSQL, Sybase) and Hierarchical Databases (PI-AF (Asset
Framework), which so very interestingly links relational ’meta-data’ to time-
series data via paths in the PI-AF database). The AF paths also lend themselves
nicely to tree-view navigation, very slick. This is an awesome, real world
example of all three types of databases linked together performing mission
critical functions. I find it so very interesting. I do love my work.
Consulting Experiences
PJM Interconnection, Generation Department August 2014 ’ August 2015
Generation Data Analyst
I served as the Primary Data Analyst and Lead Quality Control Analyst on a very
High Visibility Systems Integration Project to join and create a Master Cross
Reference and Unified view of Generating Units across the Outage Management
System (OMS), Market Systems (RTLMPs, Real-Time Locational Marginal Pricing),
OSI PI Data Historian and Capacity Resource Planning Application. This role
2. primarily involved analyzing Siemens Spectrum EMS Oracle Data in TOAD via SQL
(80-90% of time).
Daily Duties also include maintaining all control room video wall displays, both
PI Process Book displays and Siemens Spectrum EMS visualization as the network
model changes and enhancements are made to improve situational awareness. This
is core Generation Dept. workflow in direct support of Dispatch Group in System
Operations. Responsible for all PI related workflow on the business-side.
NextEra Energy January 2014 – May 2014
PI Systems Integrator
I developed a PI System Health Monitoring solution for Next Era Energy Fossil
sites and Solar sites. This greatly enhanced PI System Reliability & Monitoring
Capability across their fleet of Generation Assets. This solution is comprised
of a suite of PI Displays and is currently in use by System Operations to more
efficiently and effectively identify issues with the PI infrastructure and to
alert IT support of the issues for resolution instantly. Key Performance
Indicators and Performance Metrics Summary Visualization with –drill-down–
capability from top to bottom throughout the fleet and sites were also provided.
PJM Interconnection October 2011 – December 2013
PI Support Engineer / EMS Analyst
I was the PI Support Engineer & Real Time Data Analyst in the Generation
Department at PJM Interconnection. I managed all business-side PI work flow and
was liaison between System Operations and Ops. Support and I.T. Managed daily
work activities of junior consultants and directly supervised Drexel E.E. co-ops
for the Generation Dept. Worked closely with System Operations and Maintained
all Control Room Video Wall Displays / Visualization, both ongoing maintenance
and enhancements. Conducted extensive real time EMS data analysis from ICCP &
DNP data sources to AGC system logic to the EMS and all the way down to the
historian to diagnose and solve issues quickly.
Satisfied Historical PI Data requests of all types for folks at all levels
throughout the organization. PJM Client Managers, System Operations Supervisors,
Directors and Engineers throughout all departments of the business including
Markets Settlements and Transmission Planning for example, routinely contacted
me directly for PI data related assistance.
