The Ultimate Goal for a Filter
Operate at the Target Level Cleanliness (TLC)
  How?
 know the recommended or required ISO cleanliness level
    establish system pressure range
 account for severe or extreme duty cycles
 monitor failure/breakdown levels -- decrease TLC if
     incidents unacceptable
    follow manufacturer guidelines
 design for it by implementing a CONTAMINANTION
     CONTROL PROGRAM

Contaminant Sources
 Built-In/Implanted Contaminant
 supplied by the manufacturer at no extra cost!!!
 potentially included in components…including pipes
    and tubes
 homemade reservoirs can be a killer
 new fluid is NOT necessarily clean
 Ingressed Contaminant
   seals, breathers, maintenance actions

Damage Caused by Contamination

 Surface scoring and wear results in:
 Loss of oil though internal leakage
    Loss of efficiency
 Loss of position holding characteristics

 Fine particle build-up results in:
    Erratic hydraulic system performance

 Fluid degradation results in:
 Particulate contamination which speeds up rust and corrosion

Sources of Sampling Error

    • Leaving sample bottles open too long
    • Using previously contaminated bottles
   • Failure to flush sampling ports and lines

Note: Such errors are likely to result in higher contamination
                   readings than actual.
What Can Be Done ?
To Assure Maximum Component, Fluid Life
        and Superior Equipment Operation

          CONTAMINANTS
        MUST BE REMOVED !!!!
                  HOW ?
Through Proper Filtering, Monitoring,
       Analysis and Control
Filtration = Contamination Control
  Filtration is Necessary to:

 Reduce Wear and Failure of System Components

   Reduce Overall System Malfunction
