this is what i talked while showing this power- point: 1) Garbage island also known as Great Pacific garbage patch 2)Garbage island is a concentration of plastic mass near the west coast and Hawaii. 2.1) It has high amounts of plastics, chemical sludge, marine wastes and other trash, trapped by the currents of the North Pacific ocean. 2.2) in 2006, it was estimated that is had 46,000 pieces of floating plastic per square mile. 2.3) About 10 percent of the more than 200 billion pounds of plastic that the world produces each year, ends up in the ocean 3) Do you believe that this marine mass of plastic is bigger than twice of Texa's size that is almost seven hundred square kilometres (695.662 km²) and it’s 10 metres deep 4) Where does this trash come from? This trash comes from us, people. we are the ones that are polluting by throwing trash on the floor and not in the garbage containers to recycle. 5) Garbage trip: After throwing trash on the streets these go into the drains, then go out to the Bay and end up into the Ocean. 6)How does this affect us? 6.1) Our trash goes to the ocean than the sun breaks down plastics into tinier pieces and it is eaten by jellyfish and smaller life forms. Then bigger fish eat those and eventually we eat those fish and the plastic as well. 6.2) The chemicals in them is the reason for early onset of diabetes, problems with livers and kidneys, and every major public health crisis that has affect affect most of the population in the last 30 years 7) But we aren’t the only ones that are affected with this. The animals of the sea are the ones that suffer the most. 7.1)For example, the sea turtles often mistake plastic bags for jellies, their favorite food. Albatrosses mistake plastic resin pellets for fish eggs and feed them to chicks, which die of ruptured organs. 7.2) Seals and other marine mammals are especially at risk. They can get entangled in abandoned plastic fishing nets, which are being discarded more often because of their low cost. 8) The Ocean Cleanup project Boyan Slat is a 21 years old man and when he was 16 he found a way to clean up the ocean. 8.1) He created a passive system that is an artificial coastline connected to the seabed, positioned in an angle, in V shape and with the ocean’s own current, the trash gets pushed towards the center becoming a hundred times more concentrated. Acording to him in 10 years, with this system, he can clean half the garbage island. 9)How can we stop this? By reducing -> Lowing the amount of waste created, Reusing -> Using things more than once and Recycling -> Using materials to make new products 9.1) it all starts with you and your decisions 10) Now that you know all this information, what will you do differently? You can be a Change-Maker if you think big
