2. Romania is a sovereign state located in Southeastern Europe.
It borders the Black Sea, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Hungary, Serbia,
and Moldova. It has an area of 238,391 square kilometres
and a temperate-continental climate. With 19.94 million
inhabitants, the country is the seventh most populous
member state of the European Union. Its capital and largest
city, Bucharest, is the sixth largest city in the EU.
The River Danube, Europe's second longest river, rises in
Germany and flows southeastwards for a distance of 2,857
km, coursing through ten countries before emptying in
Romania's Danube Delta. The Carpathian Mountains, with
their tallest peak Moldoveanu at 2,544 m (8,346 ft), cross
Romania from the north to the southwest.
3.
4. The Carpathian Mountains dominate the centre of Romania, with 14 mountain ranges
reaching above 2,000 m , and the highest point at Moldoveanu Peak (2,544 m , pictured
below). They are surrounded by the Moldavian and Transylvanian plateaus and Carpathian
Basin and Wallachian plains.
47% of the country's land area is covered with natural and semi-natural ecosystems. There
are almost 10,000 km² (about 5% of the total area) of protected areas in Romania covering
13 national parks and three biosphere reserves.
The Danube river forms a large part of the border with Serbia and Bulgaria, and flows into
the Black Sea, forming the Danube Delta, which is the second-largest and best-preserved
delta in Europe, and also a biosphere reserve and a biodiversity World Heritage Site. At
5,800 km ² the Danube Delta is the largest continuous marshland in Europe, and supports
1,688 different plant species alone.
5. Since the Romanian Revolution of 1989, the Romanian educational system has been in a
continuous process of reform.
In Romania children can attend:
› Kindergarten (between the ages of 3 and 6),
› Primary school (between the ages of 6 and 11)
› Secondary school (between the ages of 11 and 15)
› High school (between the ages of 15 and 19)
Formal education is compulsory until tenth grade.
Higher education in Romania is less centralized than in many countries in the West,
with every university having its own internal policies regarding admission, exams and
conditions for graduation. With historically established universities in major cities such as
Iași, Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara, Târgu Mureș, Craiova, Romania's higher education
institutions form a much looser network than in other European countries, offering most
of the qualifications sought after by today's high-school graduates.
University of Bucharest was opened in
1864.
6. Dobrogea (Dobruja) is a historical region shared today by Bulgaria and
Romania. It is situated between the lower Danube River and the Black
Sea, and includes the Danube Delta, Romanian coast, and the
northernmost part of the Bulgarian coast. The territory of Dobrogea
comprises Northern, which is part of Romania, and Southern
Dobrogea, which belongs to Bulgaria.
The territory of the Romanian region Dobrogea is now organised as
the counties of Constanța and Tulcea, with a population of slightly less
than a million. Its main cities are Constanța, Tulcea, Medgidia and
Mangalia. Dobrogea is represented by dolphins in the coat of arms of
Romania.
With the exception of the Danube Delta, a marshy region located in its
northeastern corner, Dobrogea is hilly, with an average altitude of
about 200–300 metres. The highest point is in the Țuțuiatu (Greci)
Peak in the Măcin Mountains, having a height of 467 m. The Dobrogea
Plateau covers most of the Romanian part of Dobrogea.

9. Near the Danube, a relatively short distance to the Black Sea
(150 kilometers), with a mountain “at its feet” the Macin town
seems to have got the attention of tourists who place it on the list of
places which must be visited.
Macin, considered one of the oldest urban centers of the
country, is a town in Tulcea County, Dobrogea region. It is the second
urban center of Tulcea County if we take into account the number of
inhabitants and economic potential and development prospects.
Macin is situated on a plateau terrace, bordered in the north-east tip
Suluc, southeast of quarries Jacob Deal and Turcoaia, northwest of
peak Urliga and west of the Old Danube .
10.
11. The town is located on an
ancient Celtic settlement, named
Arrubium. It was then included in
the Getic polities of Rhemaxos
and Zyraxes, then conquered by
the Roman Empire, which
stationed a cavalry unit in this
place between 99 and 241 AD.
The ruins of the old Roman
fortifications, could be seen
today on the top of "Cetate" Hill.
Part of the Bulgarian, Byzantine
and later Ottoman Empire, it was
included for some time in the
Wallachian and Moldavian
voivodates.
It was the site of the Battle of
Măcin in 1791.
12. The Macin Mountains are of remarkable importance in the country's
mountains, being the oldest mountains in Romania. Due to the
numerous historical vestiges, the researchers' interest is focused on the
archaeological excavations and equally on the research of existing vast
natural treasure here – geological, botanical and zoological.
On different levels of vegetation, between 7 and 467 m - Tutuiatu Peak,
we meet the unique steppe landscapes on the slopes, followed by
forests with oak, flowering ash, hornbeam and downy oak, leading to
bushes on the peaks and cliffs, and steppe-looking alpine meadows.
In the park there is one of the oldest, exciting and known reserves of
our country – the Beech Valley Natural Reservation. It is characterized
by the unique and vigorous presence of Tauric beech, which shows
intermediate characters between the native beech, Oriental beech and
coppice flora, unique in Dobrogea and similar to Crimean beech forests.
