Teachers Support Technology in the Classroom How to Integrate Technology: Courtney Daunt Rectifying Negative Situations: Ronda Brown Teacher Benefits: Ryan Moore Effects of Technology Integration on Students: Janet Brock
Integrating Technology Effective Integration There are four key components of learning with technology. Active Engagement Participation in groups Frequent Interaction and feedback Connection to real-world experts “Effective technology integration is achieved when the use of technology is routine and transparent and when technology supports curricular goals.”
Ways To Integrate Technology **It’s important to keep students connected to the real world. *They incorporate real world experiences and retain more information. Ways to do so…. Create class website. Showcase student work. Make class announcements.
Ways To Integrate Continued Create online assignments. i.e. Virtual field trips and scavenger hunts. Access online weather forecasts. Incorporate into morning calendar routine. Challenge students in math using online math quizzes and problems.
Thematic Units In a thematic unit one topic is covered in depth. i.e. Rain Forest Unit **With the unit you are able to cover all subject areas and integrate various technology tools. You can…. Create PowerPoint Quizzes Use interactive or site relevant maps. Study relevant information on various internet sites. i.e. You could study various fruits found in the rain forest and develop excel graphs based on the class preferences. Design a research project. i.e. Amazon Alphabet
Negative Situations Insufficient time to learn technology All teachers at different levels of understanding Student technology access Funding and Updating Technology
Professional Development Ensures ALL teachers are educated on a continual basis in regards to new technology and the technology plan for the school Increases time to plan, practice, try new ideas, collaborate, and reflect on new technology
Professional Networked Learning Collaborative(PNLC) Creating PNLCs will help assist teachers with integrating technology into their classroom. Tech support access
Technology Access Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) Forms Providing alternatives to students without technology.   Such as having computer labs/media center open before & after school for students to get work done
Updating Technology Technology Planning Committee Research technology before purchasing to make sure it can be updated without total replacement Take Total Cost of Ownership to the Classroom Click to determine all operating costs of new technology!
Funding Technology Funding Strategies should combine short and long term measures: Local tax revenues, Bonds, Grants, Federal Programs, and reallocation of school funds Partnering with universities, the community, and forming teacher networks

  1. As teachers we have seen the learning environment in our schools change as we have invited technology into our classrooms. We embrace this stimulating and productive approach to education, and will share with you in this presentation what we see as the benefits of using technology and how to rectify the challenges presented by the its integration into the classroom.
  2. The question is no longer whether or not technology should be used in schools. The emphasis now, is how to make sure technology is used efficiently to improve student learning and achievement. However, there are some negative situations that are inevitable when introducing technology into the school environment. This includes: Teachers having insufficient time to learn and use new technology, all teachers having different levels of understanding of technology, technology access for the teachers as well as the students, what to do when technology is not working or students use technology inappropriately, and funding and updating technology.
  3. Professional Development is a key component to fully integrating technology into the curriculum. A well-planned, ongoing professional development program that is tied to the school’s curriculum goals, designed with built-in evaluation, and sustained by adequate financial and staff support is essential if teachers are to use technology appropriately to promote learning for all students in the classroom. Rodriguez, Ginger. "Critical Issue: Providing Professional Development for Effective Technology Use ." Technology in Education. Ed. Randy Knuth. 2000. North Central Regional Educational Laboratory. 15 June 2009 <http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/methods/technlgy/te1000.htm>.
  4. How much teachers know about technology makes a big difference in their use of technology. Creating Professional Networked Learning Collaborative within the confines of Professional Development will assist teachers in integrating technology into their classroom. It is crucial to have teachers work with other teachers who have varying levels of technology comprehension. This creates a support system for the teacher to become proficient in the use of technology in content areas to support student learning. A teacher also needs to have access to technical support for the unexpected technical difficulty that happens more often than not when incorporating technology into the classroom. "Education Innovation: A Different Angle of Approach to Education." [Weblog Leveraging The “Networked” Teacher: The Professional Networked Learning Collaborative] 08 June 2009. Education Innovation. 10 Jun 2009. <http://educationinnovation.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/06/leveraging-the-networked-teacher-the-professional-networked-learning-collaborative.html>. Zhao, Y., (2003). “What Teachers Need to Know about Technology? Framing the Question. What Should Teachers Know about Technology? Perspectives and Practices. Research Methods for Educational Technology Series.” Ed. Yong Zhao. Information Age Publishing: Greenwich, CT.
  5. In order for technology to be equitable it must be accessible to all students. All students who are to use school technology must first sign an Acceptable Use Policy form. This form mandates them to use the schools technology appropriately and to also hold the student accountable for their actions so that the investment the school has made will be available for future students. The school should also have technology available to students who might not have access to technology at home. Having the media center or the computer lab open before, during, and after school will ensure students the opportunity to get assignments using technology completed. Bell, Rosemary. "Critical Issue: Ensuring Equitable Use of Education Technology." Technology in Education. Ed. Rafael Ramirez. 1997. North Central Regional Educational Laboratory. 15 June 2009 <http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/methods/technlgy/te400.htm>.
  6. A technology planning committee is necessary to ensure that the implemented educational technology allows for increased capabilities in the future, rather than total replacement of the entire system. Therefore, it must be research based and meet the schools high standards. For this team to be proactive it might take advantage of a total cost of ownership program. This program will help determine the total cost involved in operating networks and computers.Rodriguez, Ginger. "Critical Issue: Providing Professional Development for Effective Technology Use ." Technology in Education. Ed. Randy Knuth. 2000. North Central Regional Educational Laboratory. 15 June 2009 <http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/methods/technlgy/te1000.htm>. Hyperlink:http://www.edtechvoi.org/
  7. The cost of using technology is not considered a one-time investment but an ongoing expense and should be treated that way in the school’s budget. There are many different ways for a school district to raise funds for technology purposes. They can use any combination of local tax revenues, bonds, grants, federal programs, and reallocation of the school funds. Partnering with universities, the community, and forming teacher networks are additional ways to provide direct funding for technology.Rodriguez, Ginger. "Critical Issue: Providing Professional Development for Effective Technology Use ." Technology in Education. Ed. Randy Knuth. 2000. North Central Regional Educational Laboratory. 15 June 2009 <http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/methods/technlgy/te1000.htm>.
  8. Finally, let’s look at how the integration of technology into the classroom affects the students. Here are some of the remarkable changes teachers have observed since integrating technology into their schools.jpbrock
  9. When using the WISE (http://wise.berkeley.edu/) website from Berkeley to teach the heredity unit this year I found that more students were participating. My fifth graders worked with a partner. Partners wrote in online journals, recorded data and information about plants they grew in the classroom, participated in surveys and online discussions with other students, went to a virtual greenhouse where they could adjust the amounts of sunlight and water given to tomato plants. Students who often sat silently or were off task, were participating.jpbrock
  10. Students can make choices about whether or not to use technology for a project. Poster board or PowerPoint, podcast or a speech. Each student is able to choose the approach that works best for them. For some these choices are overwhelming. The teachers role is to teach and guide the student how to use technology appropriately. <http://www.ed.gov/pubs/EdReformStudies/EdTech/effectsstudents.html>jpbrockjpbrock
  11. Teachers observed that students are actively thinking when using technology. Students ask questions about content and puzzle out how to use websites and software correctly. Problem solving happens when children do their on thinking or search out someone who can help them (sometimes the teacher, more often another student). http://www.ed.gov/pubs/EdReformStudies/EdTech/reasons.htmljpbrock
  12. The integration of technology in the classroom leads to project based learning. Concept maps, outlines, and using planning software such as Inspiration offer students the ability to plan and organize their projects. http://www.edutopia.org/technology-integration-introductionjpbrock
  13. By teaching students to use technology that they use in their careers and everyday lives, students are asked to perform authentic tasks. Learning about the roles of community members through recorded interviews; researching a community issue, developing reasonable solutions, and communicating those through email or blogs, and developing a class website to inform families about homework assignments, school activities are examples of how students can use technology in a meaningful way.jpbrock
  14. Students are able to evaluate their own progress using technology. Many interactive sites and software have self-checking tools incorporated in the activities and lessons. Presentation of projects to an audience of peers, educators, families, and community members gives students valuable and authentic feedback to their work. Students can also self evaluate…have they met the goals that they developed for themselves? As you watch the clip of students at Kings Middle School perhaps you can do your own evaluation of the effectiveness of integrating technology into the classroom.
  15. http://www.edutopia.org/expeditionary-learning-maine-video
  16. Thank you for listening to our views on why technology should be used and integrated in the classroom. We hope these ideas will help you to integrate technology into your learning community. (If you would like to see the entire video from Kings Middle School, click on the link.)jpbrock
