Students from Tamaki College have been participating in the Liggins Institute Student-Scientist Mentor Scheme, where they conduct scientific research projects linked to the curriculum under the guidance of scientist mentors. The students presented their findings to families and explored issues of diabetes and obesity. Tamaki College also offers several scholarships including those for academic excellence, leadership, and Pacific Island students to attend the Auckland University of Technology. 4. Tamaki College is the first school to be part of the Student-Scientist
Mentor Scheme. Students enter the Scheme at Year 10 and are matched
with a scientist mentor. In their first year they participate in the Royal
Society of NZ CREST programme, undertaking a novel scientific
research project which is linked to the New Zealand curriculum.
The students attend regular workshops at the Liggins Institute and
have Liggins Institute staff working with their teachers in school.
The students are in their second year in the the Institute’s Student-Scientist
Mentor Scheme, one of the outreach programmes of the innovative
Liggins Education Network for Science, directed by senior Biology
Teacher, Jacquie Bay.

5. The students presented their findings to an invited audience including the
Tamaki College Tongan Parent Community Group, families and friends.
A group of students from our school have been exploring issues of diabetes
and obesity with researchers at The University of Auckland’s Liggins
Institute. The work is linked to assessment in science at NCEA Level 1 and
the students have set it within the context of it’s impact on Maori and
Pasifika Communities.

8. The Auckland University of Technology offer Tamaki College three
Scholarships each year.
1. The Significant Student Scholarship
• Must study at degree level
• Must be on target to achieve 60 Crs at L3
• NZ Citizen or permanent resident
• Selected by Tamaki College on the basis of leadership excellence demonstrated
at secondary school in community, cultural or sporting activities
2. Vice Chancellors Scholarship
• Must study at degree level
• Must be on target to obtain 80 Crs at L3 credits
• NZ Citizen or permanent resident
• Selected by Tamaki College on the basis of consistent academic excellence
demonstrated at secondary school
3. Pasifika Community Partnership Scholarship
• Must have the potential to successfully complete an under graduate – degree
and a track record of success – academic, sporting, cultural or leadership
• You can pathway to a degree but must meet the following criteria the poten-
tial to complete an under graduate degree
• NZ Citizen or permanent resident
• Must have - Pasifika ethnicity
• Selected by Tamaki College on the basis of leadership, and excellence dem-
onstrated at secondary school in community, cultural or sporting activities

The University of Auckland Chancellor’s Awards for Top Maori and Pacific
Scholars
• Top Maori and Pacific scholars who are NZ citizens or permanent residents of over
two years, currently in Yr 13 at a NZ secondary school and enrolling full time at the
University of Auckland
• You must have been at Tamaki College for a minimum of one school year prior to
the award being offered
• Basis of selection: Academic ability based on results from NCEA L2 plus demon-
strated cultural participation in Maori or Pacific context, all round ability, leadership
potential, motivation to attend and likelihood to succeed at a research-led Univer-
sity
The University of Auckland Jubilee Awards (School leavers)
• Offered to students who are NZ citizens or permanent residents of over two years,
currently in Yr 13 at a NZ secondary school and enrolling full time at the Univer-
sity of Auckland
• Basis of selection: academic merit, motivation to succeed at University and finan-
cial need

10. The University of Auckland Scholarships
• Offered to students who are NZ citizens or permanent residents of over two
years, currently in Yr 13 at a NZ secondary school and enrolling full time at
the University of Auckland.
• Basis of selection: outstanding academic ability based on results at L2 or
higher, as well as demonstrating leadership potential, all round ability,
and achievement in cultural and sporting abilitie sand motivation to attend
a research-led University.
• To hold the scholarship the awardee must obtain at least 80 L3 credits or L4
NCEA with a substantial portion at Excellence.
The University of Auckland Alumni Scholarship
• One student nominated by Tamaki College.
• Offered to students who are NZ citizens or permanent residents of over two
years, currently in Yr 13 at a NZ secondary school and enrolling full time at
the University of Auckland.
• The basis of selection will be academic merit, motivation to succeed at Univer-
sity and demonstrated financial hardship.
The First Foundation Scholarships:
High achieving Year 11 students who are achieving academically in Year 12 are
considered for the scholarship. The scholarships provide students with the majority
of their fees paid for University, mentoring and holiday employment. To be eligible
applicants must be on track academically and have a financial need – this is based
on the parental/caregiver income.

11. ALDIS Scholarship:
• Study mathematics over 2009 Summer School period (Jan/Feb) at the University
of Auckland.
• Students leaving school at the end of this year with in an interest in studying
some mathematics at University.
• Students from a Maori or Pasifika background.
• Successful applicants will take Maths 102 course at Summer School or an ap-
propriate alternative.
• All Summer School and course fees will be paid for by the Department of
Mathematics.
• In addition each successful applicant attending Summer School will receive
$1000 from the Department of Mathematics.
• A pass in the Summer School will be credited towards a degree when the
scholar is admitted to enroll at the University of Auckland.

14. In Term 3 our school celebrates maths week by encouraging students
to participate in the Mathex competition as well as a variety of chal-
lenges, auctions, survivor games, online activities, origami and other
fun activities. Both students and staff also participated in the daily
challenges.
Thanks to all the Maths teachers for their hard work, creativity and
boundless energy and to Mrs Pamaka for sponsoring the lap-top and
vouchers to the value of $50 for each winner.
The overall maths week winner receives a lap-top.
