2. • Cholera is an infection of the small intestine that causes a large
amount of diarrhea.
• Its caused by the infection of the intestine with the bacterium
Vibrio Cholera.
• Other symptoms are vomiting and leg cramps.
• Cholera causes rapid loss of body fluids that lead to
dehydration and shock.
• 3-5 million cases and over 100,000 deaths occur each year.

3. • The cholera bacterium is usually found in water or food that is
been contaminated by feces (poop) from a person who has
been infected with cholera.
• Cholera is found and spread in places with little water
treatment, poor sanitation, crowding, war and inadequate
hygiene. For example: Africa, Asia, India, Mexico, and South
and Central America.

4. • A person gets cholera by drinking water or eating food
contaminated with the cholera bacterium. For example: eating
raw or undercooked Shellfish and Oysters.
• Cholera isn’t contagious.

6. • Seek medical attention immediately if you think you have
chloera.
• You may be given fluids by mouth or through a vein to replace
fluid and electrolytes lost because of the diarrhea.
• Antibiotics may shorten the time you feel ill. Antibiotics include
tetracycline and doxycline.

7. • When visiting/traveling to places where cholera may be found
take precaution with food and drinking water.
• Recommendations:
Avoid tap water, fountain drinks, and ice cubes.
Wash your hands often with soap and water.
Do not eat raw or undercooked meat/seafood or unpeeled
fruits and vegetables.
