4. What comes to your
mind when you hear the
word CHURCH?

5. The church
was born as a
movement.
It’s still
moving.

6. The church was simply a
“gathering of people” who came
together around one belief: “Jesus
was the Risen Christ,
the Son of the
Living God.”
That was all
they had. That
was enough.

7. The church was a
MOVEMENT.

8. What is meant by t he Word
“ CHURCH” ?

9. In Greek church means:
“EKKLESIA” – “Called out ones”
-Congregation, Assembly or Gathering

10. In English church means:
“KIRCHE” – “Lord’s house”

11. This makes really BAD
translation created some
really bad theology.

12. The CHURCH became a
PLACE, rather than a
MOVEMENT OR
GATHERING.
Controlled by the people who
controlled the building.

13. In sixteenth century, a scholar
named William Tyndale did
something bold.
“Father of the English Bible”
translated and published the Bible
in English from the original Greek
and Hebrew texts.

14. This was scandalous because
it gave away the power of the
“church.” He once said to the
Bishops of the Church of
England, who wanted to keep
the Scriptures out of the hands
of the common people:

15. “. . . if God spare my life, ere many years,
I will cause a boy that driveth the plow to
know more of the Scriptures than thou
dost.”

16. In 1524, he fled from England to
Germany, where his first version
of the
New Testament was published
and smuggled into England.
Tyndale continued translating the
Bible until a friend betrayed him,
and he was hung and burned at
the stake in 1536.

17. One of the things that drove the
church leaders of his day “crazy”
was that he translated EKKLESIA
as “CONGREGATION” rather
than “CHURCH,” moving the
focus from a BUILDING to the
PEOPLE.

resurrection, His
“ekklesia” gathering
officially launched.

of Acts tells us
that after the
resurrection
Jesus Christ
spent 40 days
with His followers. He told them
NOT TO GO PUBLIC until the
HOLY SPIRIT SHOWED UP.

Him [Jesus Christ], saying,
“Lord, is it at this time You are
restoring the kingdom to Israel?”

SPIRIT has come upon you;

27. They went back to Jerusalem and
waited for two weeks. Luke, who
researched all of this, tells us that
it was the apostles, some women,
including Mary and the brothers of
Jesus.

28. On the day of Pentecost, a Jewish
feast day when the city would have
been full of Jews and converts from all
over the world, the Holy Spirit fell on
the men and women in the room.

29. Evidence?
They could speak in the language
of the Jews from different regions
that were visiting Jerusalem for
the feast. How can these
Galileans speak our language?

up and
preached the
first sermon in
the history of
the church.

were the church.

to do one thing:
Create followers of Jesus
Christ.

43. And from that day forward,
there has always been a group
who refused to let go of that
ideal.

44. Refused to make it a building.

45. Men like William Tyndale, who
defied the church leaders when
they sought to make it something
else.

46. People like you who give and serve and
invite and cheer when someone is
baptized. You are the church.

47. People who realized that when you gather
in your home or office,
you are the church.

48. People who realized that when you serve
the poor, you are the church.

49. . . . when you pray for the sick,
you are the church.

50. . . . when you live out the values of Jesus
and you feel like an outcast in your
fraternity, sorority, office, or home, you are
the church.

51. That’s why we continue
to create more
gathering places.

52. Send you on short-term trips.
Raise money, Train leaders.
We agree with Peter that Jesus is
the Christ, the Son of the Living
God.

53. CONCLUSION:

54. I don’t know what comes to
your mind or what you feel
when you hear the word
“church.”
But from now on, I hope you
will think:

55. a multiplying, multicultural
gathering of people who believe
that Jesus is the Lord and
Savior and whose lives reflect
his teaching.
The church began as a
movement. It’s still moving.
And by God’s grace, we will be
part of that movement the
church for our generation.

56. We should consider that we are called in the
church to Learn together, Live together, Go
together, Give together, Fight sin together, Pray
together and Serve together then Jesus will be
lifted up and recognize by many and we could
bring them closer to Christ. The good news is
that together we become stronger and can
accomplish so much for God. One of the
greatest gifts and resources God has given us
is EACH OTHER.
