Barnack Drive Outfall Restoration

Description:
The Barnack Drive Outfall Restoration Project was substantially completed on March 23, 2017. The
project consisted of the restoration of 221 linear feet of eroded channel located in a Resource
Protection Area and behind the properties of 6826 & 6900 Barnack Drive, leading to Pohick Creek.
The goals of the project were to address public safety concerns, stabilize a deeply eroded channel by
using natural stream design techniques and provide enhanced water quality.
Project Overview:
• Restore the outfall channel with imbricated stone step pools and reinforced bed mix riffle
sections.
• Stabilize channel banks using coir matting.
• Re-vegetate with native plants, trees and shrubs to promote reforestation in disturbed areas.
• Provide reduction of 29 lbs of Total Nitrogen per year, 13 lbs of Total Phosphorus per year, and
4,567 lbs of Total Suspended Solids per year.
