County of Fairfax, Virginia Background and Purpose • The student bus pass and school outreach pilot program – Developed in response to a Board matter and the FY2015 budget language requesting the Department of Transportation explore transportation partnerships with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) • FCDOT staff met with: – Washington Metropolitan Area Transportation Authority (WMATA) – City of Fairfax CUE – FCPS – Department of Neighborhood and Community Services • Discussed both short- and long-term opportunities for encouraging increased student and youth ridership on public transit services in Fairfax County Department of Transportation 3

- In-school outreach will take place at five area high schools: Edison High School James Madison High School Chantilly High School Mt. Vernon High School South Lakes High School Printing cost was $2,873 for plastic, sequentially numbered passes.
- FCPS is developing a parental approval form that must be signed and returned by the student applying for a bus pass. FCPS school administrators will track passes by way of the unique identifier (serial #) imprinted on each pass.
- Student pass is good for one year. Each successive year will be a different color to insure bus operator know that presented pass is valid. Pass includes Fairfax Connector rules of conduct for passengers on the reverse side of the pass. Students will be treated like all other Connector passengers when it comes to violations of conduct rules.
- Passes have been printed and distributed to FCPS Administration for subsequent distribution to the schools. MV Divisions have been supplied with sample passes for operator training.
- Farebox programming to allow for identification of student trips. Ridership date will be monitored in the coming year to assess utilization of program. Information compiled from ridership reports, FAST reports, and customer service input will be used to identify any program modifications that should be considered in the following years of the student bus pass program.
