Home Away From Home: Soldiers Find Safe
Haven in the Desert

Yuma - Nearly 300 members of the Washington
National Guard are now working along the border
in the Yuma Sector. But when the troops are off
duty, they head home to a unique tent facility in
Yuma County. From the outside, you can see that
the facility offers everything the troops need. But
step inside, and you'll discover it's also equipped
with a lot of things the troops want.
Just ask Cpl. J'harv Tull: "This is one of the best
forward operating bases I've ever been on. We
have this large air conditioned tent, TV, and
wireless internet we can use when we have a
chance."
And that's not all. It also has private shower
trailers and even a laundry room.
"For troops who are deployed out in the field,
this is basically the Hilton," says Cpl. Tull.
And for the soldiers and airmen, it's also become
a home away from home. The group has been in
the Yuma sector since the beginning of
September. For the past two weeks, they've
been watching the border and reporting any
suspicous activity to agents.
Cpl. Hill says, "It's an honest job. It makes you
feel like you're doing something important."
The troops work for about 24 hours and then
take about 24 hours off. They say it's nice to
have a comfortable place to escape from the sun
and even catch a Seahawks football game.

"It's great to watch the game with the people from
Seattle. We just watch them go out and do what
they do best," says Pfc. Corey Lecuyer.
Pfc. Lecuyer has also been watching local border
patrol agents do what they do best. And now he
says he's considering moving to the desert full time
to join them.
He says, "I never really realized how closely we
would be working with the Border Patrol, and now I
think it would be perfect."
Note: The tent facility took just nine days to build,
and it's expected to stay in place for at least two
more years. The Washington guard members will
be leaving at the end of the month, and they'll
eventually be replaced by more soldiers and airmen
in support of Operation Jump Start.
