2. Introduction
I chose two topics for this assignment-
technological advancements and
childhood adventures.
I chose these two topics because
technological advancements and
children are both two subjects that
interest me.
I wanted to inform my audience on some
of the changes that have occurred since
the 1930’s.
3. Back in the 1930’s life was simple and making telephone calls was of great
amazement to people around In that time.
4. Today in 2009, cell phones are a very common invention, it is very difficult to go out
and not see someone talking on one.
5. Before computers were invented, people took care of their typing needs through the
typewriter. This was considered to be a valuable invention in the1930’s and it is what
many people used to learn how to type. Although this machine is not used today, the
keyboard layout has remained the same.
6. Typewriter is not even in the vocabulary of the average person alive today, its all
about Apple computers! This computer can be found in the homes of many
families fulfilling all everyday needs such as paying bills and even, ordering food.
7. Being a child in the 1930’s was very simple. This was the time that children could
go outside by themselves and enjoy simple activities such as playing on a tire
swing.
8. Children in this day age do not know what it is like to go outside and participate in
fun activities. We seek thrill and adventure in television programs instead of getting
outside and being active.
9. For children, communicating with someone who lived far away was done by writing a
letter and mailing it. This process seemed like a very efficient way of communicating in
the 1930’s, other than the telephone; which families did not always have access to in
their home.
10. The day that texting became available was the day that mailing letters for social
chatting ended. Adults and children of all ages no longer communicated through letters,
but through the usage of text messaging. Texting is most commonly used because as
time goes by, people are developing a “I want it done now” mindset and no longer
have the ability to wait for anything such as a letter to be mailles/received.
11. For many children in the 1930’s, Sorry! Was a fun game to play when you were in
the house. This game is what kept children busy if they were inside, it was
considered to be a very exciting game.
12. Nowadays children are no longer fascinated with board games but with action
packed video games; this invention provides them with the feeling of being in their
own world where they control everything. Children spend many long hours at a
time playing these games, they are missing their chance to get outside, explore
their surroundings and enjoy life as a child.
13. Only about 50% of Families in the US owned a car during the 1930’s. Cars were
seen as a big deal, but only to those who could afford them.
14. Cars are loved by many people in today’s society. They are no longer seen as just
another luxury, but as necessity for life. Since the 1930’s, the number of families
that own a car has greatly increased.
15. Conclusion
I enjoyed making this photo essay
because it gave me the opportunity to
inform my audience on technological
advancements from the 1930’s to the
present, and about the differences in
childhood adventure from the 1930’s to
the present.
Making this project also gave my the
chance to learn about things that I had
never knew about before. (Such as the
old 1930’s typewriter)
