How to E-file Form 2290 for
New Vehicle?
You must file a new Form
2290 listing only the new
vehicles. You may e-file that
2290 anytime before the last
day of the month following
the month the new vehicle
was first used.

E-File IRS Form 2290 for New Vehicle
If you have already filed your initial 2290 for the current tax year and
need to add another vehicle or have acquired a new vehicle you will need
to create a new form 2290 return with only the new vehicle on it.
You do not need to enter any of the vehicles you have already filed for on
this return, only those you have not filed for yet. The end result should
be that you have separate Stamped Schedule 1from each filing but all
should be current with the filing.
You can still paper file, but the IRS requires anyone filing for 25 or more
vehicles do so electronically and recommends that everyone do so.
Paper: Mail Form 2290 to the address shown under Where to File. If you
did not pay the tax using the Electronic Funds Transfer or Electronic
Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), mail Form 2290-V and your check
or money order with Form 2290. Or you can take your Form 2290 to the
nearest IRS office.

Electronically: File Form 2290 electronically through any electronic
return originator (ERO), transmitter, and/or intermediate service
provider (ISP) participating in the IRS e-file program for excise taxes,

Purpose of an Employer Identification
Number
An Employer Identification Number (EIN)is
also known as a Federal Tax Identification
Number, and is used to identify a business
entity. Generally, businesses need an EIN. You may apply for an EIN in
various ways, and now you may apply online. This is a free service
offered by the Internal Revenue Service. You must check with your state
to make sure you need a state number or charter.
How to apply for an EIN?
Applying for an EIN is a free service offered by the Internal Revenue
Service. Beware of Web sites on the Internet that charge for this free
service.
If you are a home-care service recipient who has a previously assigned
EIN either as a sole proprietor or as a household employer, do not apply
for a new EIN. Use the EIN previously provided.

Tax Information
Tax Year
The IRS is now accepting Form 2290 Returns for Heavy Vehicle Use
Taxes for the new 2013 - 2014 Tax Year. Each Heavy Highway Vehicle
weighing 55,000 pounds or more must be filed for on an annual basis
using Form 2290.
The Filing period for this tax begins today, July 1st and ends on August
31st.
Now that the IRS has officially begun to accept these returns

First Used Month
If you acquire a vehicle and use it on the public highways in any month
other than July, you are liable for the tax for the prorated tax period. You
must file HVUT Form and pay the tax by the last day of the month after
the month you first use the vehicle.
If there is an unpaid tax liability for the months before you acquire and
use the vehicle during the tax period, you are liable for the total tax for
the entire period, to the extent not paid. In that case, you must file Form

2290 and pay the tax by the last day of the month after the month
notification is received from the IRS that the tax has not been paid in full.
IRS Form 2290 must be filed for the month the taxable vehicle is first
used on public highways during the current period. The current period
begins July 1, 2013, and ends June 30, 2014.
VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)
A Vehicle Identification Number, commonly
abbreviated to VIN, is a unique code
including a serial number, used by the
automotive industry to identify individual
motor vehicles, towed vehicles, motorcycles,
Scooters and mopeds as defined in ISO 3833.
In 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the
United States standardized the format. It required all over-the-road-
vehicles sold to contain a 17-character VIN, which does not include the
letters I (i), O (o), or Q (q) (to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0).

The VIN of your vehicle can be obtained from the registration, title, or
actual vehicle. Generally, the VIN is 17 characters made up of numbers
and letters. Be sure to use the VIN for the vehicle and not from the
trailer.
IRS Payment Options:

Direct Debit or EFW (Electronic Funds Withdrawal)
An Electronic Funds Withdrawal can be from either a checking or savings
account. All that is needed to set this up is a routing number and an
account number.
An exclusive service that Express Truck Tax offers is the option to also

Most other options require the fees to be paid by credit cards, but

EFTPS
EFTPS stands for Electronic Federal Tax Payment System. EFTPS is a
government program that allows taxpayers to schedule Federal Tax
Payments electronically. If you select to pay by this option, you are
acknowledging that it is your responsibility to send the tax payment to
the IRS through the EFTPS.gov website. The E-Filing Program will not
send your information to EFTPS.gov, that must be completed by the
person filing.

Check/Money Order
In order to pay by Check or Money Order, the form can still be filed
instantly online, and a Payment Voucher can be printed and mailed to
the IRS. The last page of the Form 2290 is a 2290-V (or payment
voucher).
