PAVEMENT REINFORCEMENT

Modulovia® is a high modulus asphaltic concrete
made with a special modified binder developed by
Eurovia. This exclusive asphalt mix is employed as
a surface, binder and base course in pavements
subject to unusually high loadings - heavy traffic,
severe slopes and surface temperature variations
- in both urban and rural areas.
Modulovia® is both strong and flexible. It is rutting
resistant and has very good fatigue and crack
resistance. As a structural mix, Modulovia® can be
used to reduce pavement thickness and thereby
conserve natural resources.
…
AND HIGHLY FLEXIBLE
This mix is suitable for both flexible pavement
reinforcement, which makes the most of its
high modulus and deformation capacity, and
structural maintenance of thick or semi-rigid
asphalt pavements, in which its stiffness and lowtemperature crack resistance are of interest.
The type of binder and mix designs used in
Modulovia® make it a very effective asphalt mix:
high stiffness modulus
excellent fatigue behaviour
very good rutting resistance.
The surface characteristics are identical to those
of a semi-coarse asphaltic concrete of the same
grading. If a higher macrotexture is required,
Modulovia® can be overlaid with an appropriate
surface course.

PERFORMANCES
Dense-graded Modulovia® is applied in a 50 to 70mm
layer in 0/10 and 60 to 90mm in 0/14 grading.
The binder used in its composition is a hard bitumen
highly modified with polymers - Styrelf 13-20.
Modulovia® complies with the EN 13108-1 “Bituminous
mixtures” standard. It is an HMAC of the highest class
covered by the standard, Class 3.
Modulovia® exhibits test results far superior to those
obtained with HMACs based on conventional binders.
The table below presents the measured mechanical
properties of a number of Modulovia® formulas.
The use of hard polymer-modified bitumen in the
surface course eliminates the risk of thermal cracking,
which can occur under extreme weather conditions
when pure bitumen of equivalent grade – 20/30 or
15/25, for example – is employed.
During the thermal stress restrained specimen test
(in-house operating method; 10°C temperature
reduction), the breaking temperature is – 28°C for
Modulovia®, while for a pure 20/30 bitumen it remains
– 23°C.
Modulovia® with Styrelf® 13/20 has been (under a previous product
name) selected by the Direction des Routes as part of the Road
Innovation Charter and obtained a certificate in 2002.
Modulovia® is a registered trademark.
