Presented at Conferencia Rails 2010 You probably follow the motto “skinny controller, fat model”, which is a good thing. Skinny controllers are definitely the way to go but, as your domain logic grows, it’s very easy to end up with a model overweight problem, which is not so good. The issue is that your ActiveRecord objects have to deal with too many different responsibilities: validation, business rules, awareness of its own persistence, filtering… Command-Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS) is an architectural pattern that promises to improve the maintainability, performance and scalability of your applications by helping to separate concerns in your system. This pattern, along with Event Sourcing and other Domain-Driven Design ideas, is gaining increased popularity, particularly among developers building solutions for rich / complex domains. This talk will introduce these concepts and show different ways we can (re)architect our Rails application in order to get their benefits. From a simple implementation using just the “tools in the room” to a implementation “in all its full glory” using NoSQL data stores and messaging queues. All those who have a Rails projects complex enough to abuse of model callbacks, de-normalize the database or use presenter objects, may get benefits in terms of simplicity and maintainability from implementing the ideas I’ll present in this talk.

It's 2018, so practices like Test Driven Development (TDD) have long found their way into organizations. However, the practices and principles to keep those unit tests maintainable haven't really changed. Still, I regularly talk to developers that somehow ended up with an incomprehensible unmaintainable set of unit tests that they once believed in, but are now holding them back. So in this session I like to provide a refresh of those fundamental ideas and talk about why you should practice TDD, revealing intentions, naming conventions, state versus interaction based testing, and how to stay out of the debugger hell with proper mocking and assertion frameworks.

For a long time in order to achieve mutual TLS between Kafka brokers and its clients we had to use long-lived certificates which is a nightmare to manage at large scale. At TransferWise, we have around 300 microservices and most of them use Kafka for the async communication, stream processing, event sourcing, etc. We wanted to implement Kafka security in a way that reduced the maintenance burden on platform teams, while making migration of diverse clients as simple as possible. In this talk we will describe how we have achieved that goal using SPIFFE with SPIRE and Envoy, requiring zero code changes on the client side.

GraphQL is a wonderful abstraction for describing and querying data. Apollo is an ambitious project to help you build apps with GraphQL. In this talk, we'll go over how all the parts—Client, Server, Dev Tools, Codegen, and more—create an end-to-end experience for building apps on top of any data. ## Detailed description In today's development ecosystem, there are tons of options for almost every part of your application development process: UI rendering, styling, server side rendering, build systems, type checking, databases, frontend data management, and more. However, there's one part of the stack that hasn't gotten as much love in the last decade, because it usually falls in the cracks between frontend and backend developers: Data fetching. The most common way to load data in apps today is to use a REST API on the server and manage the data manually on the client. Whether you're using Redux, MobX, or something else, you're usually doing everything yourself—deciding when to load data, how to keep it fresh, updating the store after sending updates to the server, and more. But if you're trying to develop the best user experience for your app, all of that gets in the way; you shouldn't have to become a systems engineer to create a great frontend. The Apollo project is based on the belief that data loading doesn't have to be complicated; instead, you should be able to easily get the data you want, when you want it, and it should be managed for you just like React manages updating your UI. Because data loading touches both the frontend and backend of your app, GraphQL and Apollo have to include many parts to fulfill that promise of being able to seamlessly connect your data together. First, we need client libraries not only for React and JavaScript, but also for native iOS and Android. Then, we must bring server-side support for GraphQL queries, mutations, and most recently subscriptions to every server technology and make those servers easier to write. And finally, we want not only all of the tools that people are used to with REST APIs, but many more thanks to all of the capabilities enabled by GraphQL. In this talk, we'll go over all of the parts of a GraphQL-oriented app architecture, and how different GraphQL and Apollo technologies come together to solve all of the parts of data loading and management for React developers.

Does it still apply to the rest of the day-to-day programming where things look… complicated? In particular we will develop the example of executing applications which can run on single Amazon EC2 instances (for testing) or on full EMR clusters (for production) and which can take data from S3 (meaning that they need to download it and put it somewhere first) or use local data. Can we make sure we get the right paths? Can we know when it is possible to download data efficiently (using distcopy to go directly from S3 to the cluster for example)? The answer is: create specific data types to model the different cases and tame the complexity. The take-away: datatypes are not only for “data” but they can also encapsulate “logic”
