- American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) A reliable transmission with few maintenance needs is key to optimize uptime. Transmission lube change intervals and lube availability and clutch adjustment schedules can contribute to the amount of downtime for the vehicle. If something does go wrong with the transmission, how serviceable is it? Some transmissions have aren’t designed to be serviceable and may require a full swing which means more downtime and impacts your bottom line. Are the service locations limited for the specific transmission model? Tracking down a location can contribute to downtime, versus a broad network of service locations at your convenience.
- Bulk haulers are especially conscious of every pound, switching to aluminum components is a good strategy, if cost and weight savings are calculated carefully. When designed properly, you can reduce system weight while maintaining durability and reliability and serviceability – increasing fuel efficiency allowing higher freight efficiency
- With the age of automation comes the development of smart features designed to improve performance, fuel-efficiency, safety, productivity to improve your bottom line and keep drivers happy. So every driver is like your best driver. Features like predictive cruise and predictive shifting help the transmission perform seamlessly for the driver - using look-ahead technology to execute shift decisions that improve fuel economy and driver comfort. Neutral coast is a fuel-saving feature that disengages the driveline on slight downhill grades. Automation makes this possible. Levels of automation: 1 vehicle provides info/warnings – driver has informed control 2 vehicle integrates detection/response – driver ready to take control 3 vehicle is autonomous – driver takes control in emergency 4 vehicle is self-driving – occupants do not need ability to drive Examples include auto docking, etc. You want an advanced transmission capable of integrating with these features as they become available.
- What does connectivity mean? The vehicle has a telematics module so that data can be transferred, stored and analyzed. Efficient route planning through telematics use can also help reduce unproductive time that a driver spends on the road. Reducing average miles per stop can save $100s per month per vehicle. Ensures proper vehicle maintenance, reduces driver and vehicle downtime, and enhances productivity through technology and telematics Toll program also serves as an opportunity for service fleets to ensure that all vehicles optimize their travel time on toll roads by using the electronic toll lanes instead of the cash lanes. “Through connected truck technology, fleet operators will be able to optimize factors such as fuel, maintenance, and driver wages, which together contribute more than 60 percent of the total cost of ownership,” noted Bielski. “In the GCC alone, parts costs (including lubricants and tires) of a heavy commercial vehicle can exceed $3,000 per year. - Downspeeding is common strategy for achieving increased fuel economy. With downspeeding the rear gear ratio is sped up in order to lower the speed of the engine, bringing fuel efficiency improvements. Downspeeding allows the engine to operate at the most efficient rpm while generating the minimal horsepower required to maintain a 65 mph cruise speed. Direct drive isn’t always more efficient – in the vast majority of north American duty cycles, OD provides the optimal performance of fuel economy
