In a one-off deep dive carried out on the socio-cultural effects of the Tōhoku earthquake in March 2011, we found this behavior increased significantly as a result of the heightened need for crowd-sourced information. Around 30 percent of people who use social networks also use them as a first source of information about what is going on in their city, or around the world. They are most widely used for this purpose in Beijing and Cairo.
