What’s your
professional
story?
Vana Koutsomitis, speaker & entrepreneur, states this:
Here are some questions to consider when you write your story:
What did you study?
What was your first job?
What skills have you gained in your work that have led you to the next step in
your journey?
What are your “superpowers”?What are you great at?
Did you pivot or change your path? Why?
What skills from your prior roles are you applying to your current (or desired)
position?
How do you want your career to progress?
How do you describe you in a few sentences? Here is one of mine:
“I am a global scholar focused on improving the lives of students. I am
passionate about teaching, learning, and connecting people. I believe in the
power of relationships and connection to create meaning and improve all of
our lives. In my spare time, I love reading, camping, yoga, music, cooking,
learning how to be a better human through parenting and supporting
individuals to maintain their values to achieve goals.”
• Why do you want
to engage with
digital media?
• What do you want
to say?
• How will you
engage with the
digital world?
• How much of you
shines through?

Opening the Digital Door - Dr Misty Kirby, Charles Sturt University

Notas do Editor

  1. PRESENTATION: 4.35-4.49PM This presentation will highlight the various ways ePortfolios and social media can be used to forge your digital identity without fear. Many of us need some kind of online presence with our current jobs. Too, most of us know that companies look through our social media before hiring and sometimes while we work for them. In a US survey in 2017, “around 70% of the polled employers screen a candidate’s social media accounts before…an interview…That same poll also found that over 50% of employers found candidates w no social footprint problematic…” (Klowsowski, 2019).
  2. So many platforms….so little time. We need to prioritise the tools we use to forge our digital identities. What are you using and why?
  3. 2014 survey: Top 5 SM sites used for social media by scientists and engineers, as well as academics in the social sciences, arts and humanities. Which platforms do you engage in about your work/professional life? And perhaps the most pertinent question to this presentation today…..WHY? Why do you engage/want to engage with social media? What are we using and why?
  4. Why scholars use SM Van Noorden, 2014 Online collaboration: Scientists and the social network.
  5. Being aware that our online digital identities are informed by social media/ePorts/personal websites etc
  6. You tell YOUR story. Online presence needs to be uniform and tell your story. Is it cohesive across whatever platforms you’ve chosen?
  7. You tell YOUR story. Online presence needs to be uniform and tell your story. Is it cohesive across whatever platforms you’ve chosen? Vana Koutsomitis, speaker & entrepreneur, states this: Here are some questions to consider when you write your story: What did you study? What was your first job? What skills have you gained in your work that have led you to the next step in your journey? What are your “superpowers”? What are you great at? Did you pivot or change your path? Why? What skills from your prior roles are you applying to your current (or desired) position? How do you want your career to progress? Once you have written your story, use it as your draft, or platform, from which to create your essential online bios, such as your LinkedIn profile, company bio, or website story. I recommend that you make your description three to four sentences long and describe who you are and what you are passionate about. For example, here’s mine: “I am a global scholar focused on improving the lives of students. I am passionate about teaching, learning, and connecting people. I believe in the power of relationships and connection to create meaning and improve all of our lives. In my spare time, I love reading, camping, yoga, music, cooking, learning how to be a better human through parenting and supporting individuals to maintain their values to achieve goals.”

  9. Every act needs to be intentional. Let’s DREAM….It is not all about what you can offer, but also about what being connected digitally can give to us. DREAM!!!
  10. For me, a scholar, an academic, having an online presence has provided me with social supports, especially during most of my time as an academic working in destabilizing environments…
  11. Ask yourself…..what else could you/would you like to get? Why do people in your field engage with social media? Why scholars use SM Van Noorden, 2014 Online collaboration: Scientists and the social network.
  12. So as you move from DREAM to DESIGN….this is when purpose is important…Why do you want to forge your digital identity? Choose sites and platforms that will serve your purpose and fit with your story. Curate content and begin building/constructing your identity….in whatever tools you choose. Typically, pick one or two and use all other SM in private mode. Use for a while and then evaluate….
  13. We all get to the point of revision…after some time, our trajectory changes, privacy rules change and we need to reconsider. Are we using the best tools for the job?
  14. Consider others? I’m beginning to build my own website. Slack and Discord for small to med groups etc. Using mahara and pp for ePorts. Wix, Squarespace, Wordpress to build your own website.
  15. Your privacy is also a concern.
