5. 2009 E-portfolios
Implementation Trials
Implement an e-portfolio system which enables
learners to move quickly and efficiently between
education and training, employment and industry
areas ie through RPL or workplace learning &
assessment
7. 2009 E-portfolio Implementation Trials
Key Findings
• Induction & on-going just in time support
• Needs to be linked & not an add-on
• What’s in it for the learner
• Understand how to present yourself online
• Internet savvy vs being organised
• Concern over ‘e-Assessment’ & Auditors
• Using video is useful but requires ‘extra skills’

10. 2010 E-portfolio Implementation Trials
Mid-project Observations
Teacher/Trainer considerations:
- Digital literacy skills
- Connecting teachers/trainers to others experienced in using
e-portfolios
- Supporting the teachers/trainers to develop their own e-
portfolio
Learner considerations:
- Understand potential benefits of their e-portfolio
- Introduce early in the course
- Trust peers and working within a ‘safe sharing environment’
- Concerned about their privacy and ownership of information
- What is ‘appropriate information’

11. 2010 E-portfolio Implementation Trials
Mid-project Observations
Workplace considerations:
- Workplace supervisors/management need to understand how the e-portfolio
and related technologies support the learners’ training and assessment (and
potentially their workforce development), L
- Learners need to be given the time required to collect the evidence in the
workplace.
- E-portfolios and mobile devices can also potentially raise the quality of an
organisation, through better transparency and reflective practices
Training Organisation considerations:
- Regular team meetings during the implementation stage
-- Documenting the process and progress
-- Evaluation on the successes and barriers of the process
- Gaining the support of organisational technical staff
- Consider what information is collected by the e-portfolio system (eg through
activity logs)

Who am I
2008 was the first year of the E-portfolios BA, and focused on laying the groundwork for identifying the technical standards, policy requirements and operating infrastructure for an effective national approach.
Selection of RTOs to undertake E-portfolio Implementations Trials:
Coonara Community House will be using the VETSA E-portfolio, which is an instance of Mahara, with Diploma of Children Services clients seeking RPL prior to undertaking their course.
Fire Protection Association Australia will be trialling the use of a Ning website to support their fire protection industry service technicians to use video to capture ‘live’ workplace evidence for their Extinguishing Agent Handling Licence competencies.
TAFE NSW, Sydney Institute will also be using the VETSA E-portfolio to support the RPL process for their Certificate III & IV Hairdressing clients, whilst utilising point of view or camera glasses to record ‘live’ workplace evidence.
