MODULE 2:
What are they?
To identify objects in plural number such
bananas, radios, etc.
“They are + plural noun”
They are + = They are apples.
Most nouns make
their plurals by
simply adding –S to
the end as apples.
Plural nouns
• Most objects simply add –S or es to the object
name in singular.
• Nouns that end in a consonant + -y change to
ies in plural.
• Similarly, happens with words as tomato and
potato which give tomatoes and potatoes and
the other words with ending of a vocal form
their plural by adding S.
Examples
Singular
• It is a check
• It is a radio
• It is an ash tray
• It is a university
• It is a glass
Plural
• They are checks
• They are radios
• They are ash trays
• They are universities
• They are glasses
An irregular plural noun is an irregular noun in the plural
form. An irregular is formed by:
Man-men Woman-
women
Foot-feet
Child-children
Tooth-teeth
Adding a suffix
A vowel change
Structural scheme for identifying of singular or plural
objects including their corresponding numeral.
“It is one + plural noun”
“They are two (three, etc) + plural noun”
It is one : It is one table
They are three + : They are three tables.
How many or much?
For asking numerical
information of objects which
form pairs using “how many”:
For asking information of the
amount of an object without
unit in a given situation.
How many pairs? A / one pair
of shoes.
Four pairs of shoes.
How much? A / one bag of
flour.
Two bags of flour.
Examples
How much orange juice do you want?
How many biscuits did you eat?
There were too many people in the queue, so I
didn’t wait.
The teacher gave us too much homework.
I saw many toucans in the tree.

Plural nouns • Most objects simply add –S or es to the object name in singular. • Nouns that end in a consonant + -y change to ies in plural. • Similarly, happens with words as tomato and potato which give tomatoes and potatoes and the other words with ending of a vocal form their plural by adding S.
