Planning Document
1. Digital Graphic Narrative Planning
Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.
Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:
For this project it wont costanything because I have all of the equipmentI need to create the
illustrations in the book and I’m not actually going to publish my children’s book so I wont have
to pay for anything. If I was publishing my book and was to use other equipmentbesides
Photoshop I would have to pay to get the other equipment and pay to publish the bookand
ship it around the country and other places around the world also If I wanted to advertise my
new children’s bookon TV or by posters it would costa lot of money to print posters and
create a advert for TV.
Available resources:
The available resources I will have and need for my projectare the internet, Photoshop, and
existing children’s books. All of these resources can be beneficialfor my projectbecause I can
look at existing books to get inspiration when I start creating my own illustrations and story.
The internet can allow me to see how children’s books becomepopular and I can researchin
what makes a good children’s book. For Photoshop it will be one of the mostuseful resources
when I come to creating the bookbecause it allows me to create my own images/illustrations
for the children’s book and I can experimentwith differentways I can make my illustrations
2. look unique.
Quantity:
My book would be a special addition children’s book because it has a twist on the original
Hansel and Gretel and my book is based on what happens after the original book so I feellike
it should be specialaddition and I would only publish around 500 to 800 books.
Audience and Target Market:
My audience that my children’s bookwould be targeting is children around 6-9 because I feel
like my book would be goof forchildren that are learning how to read or have just learnt how to
read. I will be aiming it at both male and females because the main characters are both
genders and this would hopefully make my children’s book get a wider audience. The book
would also have to appeal to adults that have children and the social grade would need to be
around ABC1 so adults that have a stable job and have a constant flow of income so they
would be able to afford the book for their children. The bookwould be published in the UK so I
would try and target families and children across all of the UK and the book will also be
published in Germany because that’s where the original story came from so the book will be
aimed at people who are a fan of the story or have a family.
3. Quality Factors:
I want the outcome of my children’s book to be a really high quality and this is possible if I
manage my time well and spending enough time creating each page in the book. I need to
think about the way I am creating my artwork and how appealing it would be to young children.
Codes of Practice:
When creating and publishing a book there is a code of practice you have to follow. One of the
codes are that the contractors should be clear about the ownership of the copyright, this code
it to make sure whoever is involved in making the book can use other people work but mainly
to keep the bookthey have created protected so no one can use it as their own work. Another
one of the codes says that, the publisher must not cancel a contract without good or proper
reason, this makes sure that the publisher has to get all of the work in on time or they could be
loosing money and the publisher also have to make sure the producthas been produced to a
high standard and is good quality.
Regulation:
If my bookwas also a toy and interactive the bookwill be classed as a toy and would have to
be looked at by the Toy Safety Directive if I wanted to sell it in the UK or anywhere else in
Europe. Depending on the language and artwork that would be in my book it could go under
The Obscene Publications Act 1959 or the Equality Act 2010.
4. Copyright:
When creating a new bookyou can’t use other people work because it could be copyrighted.
Since the book I have picked to base my story off is very old and copyright only last for a
certain number of years so the original story will not be copyrighted anymore. If I was to use a
story that had been copyrighted I would need to get permissionto use the story or parts of the
book but it still means you wouldn’t be getting all the money you earn would have to be split
with the original owners of the book you are using. Since I am putting a twist onto the story
and changing what the artwork looks like I wont have to worry about copyright because it will
all be my own work.
Ethical Issues:
There are something’s that I wouldn’t be able to put in my bookbecause I will have to think of
representation and cultural sensitivity. I would have to think a lot about what my characters are
like because i don’t want to represent them in a wrong way that someone could get offended.
Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you don’t currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.
Resource:
Do you have
it? What do you need to do to get it?
5. The internet Yes
Photoshop Yes
Computer Yes
Existing children’s book No
I could go to a library and look at what kind of books
are around now and how they are successful.
Camera No
If I want to use a camera for my artwork I would have
to bookone in advance so I make sure I will have one
and know how long I will have it for.
Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:
6. Firstly I am going to create my main Characters, Hansel and Gretel, so I don’t have to
keep remaking them throughout the projectwhen I need them in a scene.
After creating Hansel and Gretel I will then make the other characters, Hansel and
Gretel’s father and real mother.
Session 2:
If I haven’t finished all of my characters by the second sessionI will give my self some
time to add the finishing touches.
Once all of the characters have been finish I will then start to create some of the
backgrounds/scenesthat will be used more than once so I don’t have to keep recreating
them through out the project.
Session 3:
7. Session3 is when I will start creating my first two pages. All I would create is all of the
artwork for these two pages and not add any of the text until the very end of the book.
Session 4:
This is when I will start to create the artwork for the third page in the children’s bookand
I will make sure I spend a lot of time creating all of the pages to make them have a high
quality.
Session 5:
8. In session5 this is when I will spend a lot of time on creating the artwork forpage 4 in
the book.
Session 6:
Session6 is when I will create the artwork for page 5.
Session 7:
9. This is when I will create the artwork for page 6.
Session 8:
I will create the art work for page 7 in this session and if I finish I will finish any work from
the sessionbefore.
Session 9:
10. For this sessionI will create all of the artwork for page 8 and when all of the artwork for
each page is done I will go back over them to see if they are to a good standard.
After looking back over the artwork I will add in all of the text/script to each page and
experiment with the text and the differentfonts.
Session 10:
This sessionis when I will go back over everything I have created to see if I need to add
more detail or need to add a few more aspects to the art work or text to make it more eye
catching for children.
In this sessionit will also allow me to have time to finish anything that I didn’t have time
to complete in previous session.
11. Health and safety:
Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we don’t work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
12. Health and Safety Issue How can you prevent it?
Sitting in front of a computerscreenfor too long.
The display screenequipment regulation 1992
has rules where if you are working with a
computeryou have to make sure you are being
safe by taking breaks to make sure your not
straining your eyes.
Tripping hazard
Makes sure that everyone’s bags are pushed
under a table and power cables are not in the
way of where people would be walking. By doing
this it will prevent anyone from tripping over and
hurting themselves.
Having drinks around electrical equipment
Make sure that the only drink that is allowed is
water and is in a bottle instead of a cup and when
you want a drink step away from anything
electrical to be safer.
Using substances that are hazardous
This won’t apply to me in this projectbecause
I’m not using any hazardous substances but if I
were I would have to follow the health and safety
rules. I would have to make sure I’m in a well-
ventilated area to get rid of any chemicals in the
air and also wear goggles and gloves depending
on the substance.
