Growth factors play an important role in cancer by binding to receptors on cells and stimulating their growth and division. Some growth factors, like EGF, signal through receptor tyrosine kinases and promote cancer when their genes are mutated or overexpressed. Chapter 5 of The Biology of Cancer discusses how growth factors, receptors, and their signaling pathways are involved in the development and progression of cancer.
