3. Not far from where a young boy called Billy lives, is an old wooden house standing all by itself
on the other side of the road. As Billy was walking along he found out that he could still read
the faded writing saying THE GRUBBER. In the olden times a grubber used to be known as a
sweet shop but when Billy came back he found out that there was a different sign saying FOR
SALE. One morning that FOR SALE sign had been scraped off and THAT sign was replaced
with another one saying SOLD. Then Billy was thinking “ I wonder if I could run a sweet shop
with Sherbet Suckers, Caramel Fudge, Russian Toffee, Sugar Snoops & thousands &
thousands more!” On Billy’s next visit to the Grubber he was standing on the road and saw a
giant bathtub come zooming down followed by a kitchen sink, a canary cage, a four poster
bed, two hot water bottles, a rocking horse and a washing machine.
4. Then Billy caught sight of something… out of the corner of his eye… He noticed that one of
the windows on the top floor was slowly beginning to open outwards… Then a HEAD
appeared at the open window! As Billy looked at the head the head looked back at him. It was
the Pelican, and the Pelican sang out:
Oh, how I wish for a big fat fish,
I’m as hungry as ever could be!
A dish of a fish is only my wish,
How far are we from the sea?”
5. “We are a long way from the sea,” Billy called back to him, “But there is a fishmonger in the
village not far away.” “Oh, and I was wondering,” Continued Billy “Why do you live here?”
“Well that’s easy!” exclaimed the Monkey. “We are the window cleaners!” sang the Monkey.
After a while, Billy overheard the Giraffe saying to the Pelican “Could you bring that little boy
up here, I want to talk to him.” “Alright.” said the Pelican. So the Pelican swooped down to try
and let Billy get into his beak.
After a little while Billy asked the Pelican “I will only get in if you promise not to close your
beak once I’m inside.” “I wont be able to close my beak.” the Pelican told Billy. “Show me.”
said Billy. “Oh, OK. Said the Pelican. “Can you see my beak shrinking?” asked the Pelican.
“Yes!!!” Billy shouted in amazement. “Oh, will you stop showing off down there!” Boomed the
Monkey from up above. “OK!” exclaimed the Pelican, so off they flew once Billy was inside.
.
6. When they reached the Giraffe, the Giraffe asked Billy, “ Um, what is your name little boy?” “
My name is Billy.” He told the Giraffe. “ Well,” said the Giraffe, “We need your help and we
need it fast.” “Why?” asked Billy. “Because we need to clean 677 windows, that’s why!” said
the Giraffe. “Alright then.” Said Billy. So off they went.
When they had finished they saw a man who was trying to get some cherries with his slave.
“Get them, get them!” the old man screeched to his slave. “I can’t!” shouted the slave. “Quick!”
said the Pelican to Billy. “We have to get it for the old man!” “Alright.” called Billy to the
Pelican.
7. • Quick Billy, grab them.” Whispered the Pelican. “I… am…going to get them. Yes!” cried
Billy. ”Why, thank you!” said the old man to Billy and the Pelican. “Well, I’d better be on
my way, can’t be keeping my costumers waiting in my sweet shop!” And bye-bye friends!”
said Billy.
