2. Introduction
You have learnt the two main types of vowel
phonemes – Short and Long.
You can sound them out by listening to them.
LM is slightly longer than SM.
There is a third and final type of vowel
phoneme.
It is called the Dipthong.
3. Dipthong
There are 8 Dipthongs (D) compared to 7
LMs and 5 SMs.
This makes it the most common sound
produced by vowels.
For Ds, the tongue is moving and there is a
rising stress and lowering volume.
Refer to the Vowel Phoneme Chart. You will
see it represented in Yellow.
