- Welcome to the training module on Zephyr™ Digital Airflow Sensors.
- This training module will introduce basic knowledge of airflow sensors and Zephyr™ digital airflow sensors.
- Airflow sensors measure actual flow of a gas media. Honeywell Sensing and Control’s airflow sensors can also be referred to as Microbridge or mass airflow sensors. The mass airflow sensor uses silicon based technology to create a microstructure chip. This chip consists of a thin film etched die that has a thermally isolated bridge structure with a heater and temperature element sitting on it over an etched cavity. The airflow sensor operates on the principle of heat transfer across the surface of two sensing elements. Air flow across the bridge transfers heat to the sensing element causing a change in resistance. The outcome of this is a voltage that varies in proportion to the amount of air flow through the package. Let’s take a closer look at a cross section to see this more clearly.
- Air flows over and under the first sensing element and through the cavity. As it travels it passes over heaters before hitting the second sensor to again be measured. The faster the airflow, the more the heat is retained from the heaters and transferred to the sensors. In summary, heat is lost from the heaters and transferred to the sensors. The faster the flow, the more heat is transferred.
- The new Honeywell Zephyr™ Digital Airflow Sensors deliver enhanced functionality driven by our customers’ product performance needs. Their high accuracy allows for very precise airflow measurement, often ideal for demanding applications with high accuracy requirements. These customizable devices provide enhanced reliability, digital accuracy and repeatable measurements to meet many application specifications. Zephyr digital airflow sensors are designed to measure mass flow of air and other non-corrosive gases. They are available in standard flow ranges, and are fully calibrated and temperature compensated with an on-board Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). They provide a digital interface for reading airflow over the specified full scale flow span and temperature range, and their thermally isolated heater and temperature sensing elements help provide a fast response to air or gas flow.
- High 2.5% accuracy allows for very precise airflow measurement, often ideal for demanding applications with high accuracy requirements. The Zephyr are designed with multiple port style and housing style options to meet end-user needs. Low 3.3 Vdc operating voltage option and low power consumption allow for use in battery driven and other portable applications. Full calibration and temperature compensation typically allow customer to remove additional components associated with signal conditioning from the PCB, reducing PCB size as well as costs often associated with those components
- Fast response time allows a customer’s application to respond quickly to airflow change, important in critical medical (i.e., anesthesia) and industrial (i.e., fume hood) applications. High 12-bit resolution increases ability to sense small airflow changes, allowing customers to more precisely control their application. Bidirectional flow sensing capability eliminates need for two airflow sensors, helping to reduce production costs and implementation time.
- Insensitivity to mounting orientation allows customer to position sensor in most optimal point in the system, eliminating concern for positional effects. Insensitivity to altitude eliminates customer implemented altitude adjustments in the system, easing integration and reducing production costs by not having to purchase additional sensors for altitude adjustments.
- Potential medical applications include anesthesia delivery machines, ventricular assisted devices (heart pumps), hospital diagnostics (spectrometry, gas chromatography), nebulizers, oxygen concentrators, patient monitoring systems (respiratory monitoring), sleep apnea machines, spirometers and ventilators. For example, an anesthesia delivery machine measures the flow of air, oxygen and nitrous oxide so that a specified mixture, as set by the doctor, is delivered to the patient. Using Zephyr airflow sensors helps determine the precise amount of air flow. They improve patient comfort and eases patient breathing.
- Potential industrial applications include air-to-fuel ratio, analytical instrumentation (spectrometry, chromatography), fuel cells, gas leak detection, gas meters, HVAC filters and VAV system on HVAC systems. For example, a variable air volume (VAV) system within an HVAC system is a means of varying the amount of conditioned air in different parts of the building to meet its heating and cooling needs. Honeywell’s airflow sensor helps determine the precise amount of air going through the ductwork. They allow precise adjustment of airflow into rooms. Honeywell’s airflow sensor is designed to detect flow at a very low pressure level (2 inches H2O or less).
- Zephyr™ Digital Airflow Sensors are based on the ASIC-based I2C digital output option, which eases integration to micro-processors or micro-controllers, reducing PCB complexity and component count. The digital output is designed to work as slaves and will therefore only respond to requests from a master device. Each sensor is referenced on the bus by a 7-bit slave address. The default address is 41 (29 hex). Other available standard addresses are: 57 (39 hex), 73 (49 hex), 89 (59 hex), 104 (69 hex) and 120 (79 hex). The sensor is asynchronous at start-up and will wait to supply the sequential serial number values on the first two READ commands. After the serial number registers are read in succession, the sensor will then begin repeating 14-bit calibrated flow sensor output values updated every 1 ms.
