Roles and
Functions of
Educational
Technology in
the 21st century
skills
2. 21st Century
• The central part of educational technology
thinking and planning for the future.
• Making sure that will students are prepared
to succeed in a competitive world with plenty
of opportunities for highly skilled individuals
and limited options for everyone else.

3. Both teachers and students are convinced
about the important contributions
educational technology can offer. If
properly selected and used, instructional
materials can do the following:

attention of the pupils/ students to learn.
2. Concretize abstract concepts/ideas to
promote meaningful learning.
3. Makes learning more permanent because
of the rich experiences that they provide.
4. 4. Provide self-activities for independent
learning.
5. Increase vocabulary by eliminating
verbalism.
6. Develop continuity of thought.
7. Increase the equality of learning while
decreasing the time spent.
8. Check pupils preparedness.
9. Make learning more interactive, hence
learning improved.
5. Use technology comprehensively to:
Develop proficiency in 21st century skills
• Support innovative teaching and learning
• Create robust education support system
6. MULTI-MEDIA
Can create learning situations that cannot
otherwise be accomplished like bringing
past, current, and distant events in the
classroom.
Can be used to present information in a
variety of ways which best meet particular
learning objectives
Can make learning more effective by
increasing the realism, the dynamics, and
attitudinal impact; thus increasing the
motivation.
7. In our schools and classrooms Instruction
should be:
Student-Centered
In order to contribute to society, students
will need to be able to acquire new
information as problem arise. They need
to connect the new information with the
knowledge they already have and apply it
to solving the problem at hand.
In this classroom model, the teacher
would act as facilitator for the students.
Students gather information on their own,
under the guidance of their teacher.
8. Education should be:
Collaborative
• Students should learn how to recognize
the different strengths and talents each
person can bring to a project, and change
roles depending on those attributes.
• Students should be encouraged to work
together to discover information, piece it
together, and construct meaning.
9. Learning should have:
Context
• The teacher can make a point of helping
students to understand how the skills they
are building can be applied in their lives.
• Students will be much more motivated to
learn something that they can see the
value in.
