Vision: make all the courses more digitally/social and innovation focused.
!
First step is to have our top digital instructors document their courses.
!
Please start by sending me the course content and how that content gets divided into
the 9 class sessions you teach.
!
If you have your assignments planned or any of the other components below go a head
and include them too.
T H E A S K
• Approaching “The Ask”
• What tasks keep MAS students engaged online with course material?
• Why is prototyping important in learning digital?
• How do we grow a community of influencers for instructors, students and
prospects?
• Example curriculum for “It’s a Mobile World”
TA B L E O F C O N T E N T S
• Creating a living database that will store and evolve course material is primarily a human
problem :)
• Everybody has their own rules for how to organize, index, reference and share
information, media, comments etc. There are also many ways to do all these things we
should not re-invent.
• The real challenge is making a living course database that is governed by simple rules
that leadership, instructors, and students are willing to adopt, engaged to use…habitually.
• In thinking of a revised course curriculum for “It’s a Mobile World”, I feel it’s critical to
align existing student behaviors with digital activities that reinforce the course material.

• “Oh My Gods” discuss trends,
breaking news for 15 to 30
minutes.
• Weekly decks as Slideshares
available on course tumblr where
students post/comment on stuff
too.
• Use Google Hangout / Skype for
one on one sessions, makeups.
• Student presentations include live
prototypes, linked to tumblr

Students need to produce digital ideas as things that can be experienced
• There are many great tools available for any student to show and tell their
digital tactics in animated/interactive format. This should be a requirement
for all interactive related courses.
• Gaining experience in these tools stands out with employers but more
importantly gets students familiar with the execution pressures of
concepting, building and evolving an idea.
• Requiring assignments as prototypes forces trial by fire scenarios which are
common predicaments in an agency environment.
G R O W I N G A G L O B A L M A S C O M M U N I T Y
This is a big opportunity for Miami Ad School. It’s a big investment too.
• Getting teachers to participate is not easy, incentives need to be worthwhile for all
teachers sharing their brilliance. What’s in it for them other than feeling good, how
can MAS play a role in the value exchange?
• Students need convenience to get their online habits as course activities.
Community platform needs to handle sharing, centralizing links and standardize
tagging. It should be easy and fun to store files, bulk notify, organize by tags and
discuss uploaded content.
• Getting there is not an all-in-one effort. It must be organic and driven by how the
students see themselves doing it. A community needs to evolve at the pace of your
audience and grown by how your adopters seek updates to the platform.

What are the most important concepts and skills students should learn in “It’s a Mobile World”?
• Mobile habits disrupt the way people shop, research, buy, communicate etc. Usage stats, trends. Social Media
and Mobile Behavior are very related.
• Mobile context, it’s how/when you do tasks with a mobile that you design /concept against. Purpose driven
media/aweness with mobile/social executions.
• Internet of Things, digital appliances, maker culture and how mobile design is a part of it.
• Mobile unique features (accelerometer, facial recognition, augmented reality and mobile game design)
• Must gain skill around prototyping their final assignment with web app tools like InVision or Keynote,
GameSalad.
• Understanding the difference between HTML 5/ CSS mobile solutions and native apps
• Integrated campaign thinking and creating a mobile solution that complements the organizing idea for the
campaign (second screen, retail+ experiences)
C L A S S L E S S O N S
How can the concepts and skills taught be grouped in 9 lessons:
1. Hello World

Orient class framework (like “OMGs”, weekly assignments), share 9-week curriculum, set expectations on prototyping, setup trends and mobile use
2. Mobile Platforms

Discuss mobile device types, operating systems, app types and what the app design process is like from Apple’s Mobile HIG. Share mobile UI design inspiration sites.
3. Concept of Touch

Lots of case studies on apps that use touch, thinking about human factors of hand, gesture input. Assign students a campaign for a brand (or brand of their choosing) that uses these
concepts. Students must present next week.
4. Concept of Augmented Reality

Lots of case studies on apps that use AR, thinking about data real-time data isualization, gaming and even Ikea’s product catalog with AR. Assign students a campaign for a brand (or
brand of their choosing) that uses these concepts. Students must present next week.
5. Mobile in Retail & Broadcast

Discuss how behaviors have evolved based on mobile shopping, eg. showrooming. and second screen Case studies on how retail brands like Nordstroms, REI are using mobile/social in
retail. Assign students a campaign for a brand (or brand of their choosing) that uses these concepts. Students must present next week.
C L A S S L E S S O N S
How can the concepts and skills taught be grouped in 9 lessons:
6. Mobile Gaming

Discuss how behaviors have evolved based on mobile gaming, social trends. Case studies on innovative mobile game techniques and brands. Target audience
for mobile gaming. Assign students a campaign for a brand (or brand of their choosing) that uses these concepts. Students must present next week.
7. Internet of Things

Digital appliances, quantified self, maker culture, and a lot of social good concepts. How can we make concepts that are not only purposeful and meaningful for
brands but also motivate people to change their behaviors (eg. Philippines feature phone - sim card library, Terra’s Poo Wifi)
8. Social Media and Social Good

How can Mobile media beef up the way brands amplify their meaning and purpose when related to social good campaigns. Go through campaigns that show
how mobile is used globally to promote and build awareness for social good. (Arab Spring, Venezuela)
9. Mobile and Beyond

What is the next thing after mobile, challenge students with game storming facilitation.
D E M O N S T R AT I N G T H E C O N C E P T O R S K I L L
What material (audio visual) can be shown in class to demonstrate each
lesson?
• We present mostly every week in the format of a prepared deck or prototype that
is shared with the class.
• Having a big screen that connects to student’s laptop is important, having the
student(s) walk through the presentation as they present the deck is also
important.
• Users must have a smartphone or tablet to prototype their designs and share free
apps to install and try out.
• The class also has an extra credit option where students can use Codecademy site
R E I N F O R C I N G T H E C O N C E P T O R S K I L L
What short activity can be done in class to help students apply the new
concept or skill that was presented to them?
• We present examples in class that relate to the new concept, case studies
prepared for the week as well feedback from in-class participation
• We also can brainstorm together using “gamestorming” to ideate and
concept as a short activity especially when setting up for an assignment.
• Leverage real-time polls like PollEverywhere to have the class answer in a
poll with their laptop or mobile phone while in class.
A S S I G N M E N T
What project can be assigned that will the students to master the lesson and be a possible
portfolio piece for the students.
• Each class assignment requires a deck of 3 concepts with at least 1 concept with some strategy
setup rationale, insight, target and a couple UI examples to support it. Ideally the student will
have a prototype example for their favorite. Prototype is required for the final project.
• Students are always encouraged to bring in projects into a Mobile World that they are alread
working on, want to upgrade through mobile as assignments.
• Each assignment in the class (at least about 5 of them) are designed to be inspirations for
students to add to their portfolio.
• Assignments can be in groups of two or three. For a group of three, all 3 concepts have to be
blown out and not limited to 1 since the group has more bandwidth. Many times the group
does more than 3 concepts that include assignment updates from previous weeks.
R E S O U R C E S
What books, websites, blogs, videos or other material will be good references for the
students in the course?
• I give the students about a list of 20 to 30 awesome sites to have them refer to every week —
they can also use their own. The idea is to have them pick their favorite news items “Oh My
Gods” to share them with the class that week.
• Decks every week by the teacher include more material the student can refer to regarding book
material, videos and more sites.
• For “It’s a Mobile World”, I highly recommend users download free apps and play with them for
their iOS, Android devices. Also, if they don’t have a smartphone, they should search for videos
on YouTube showing how the app works.
• I also bring in other subject matters to speak as resources that help students get engaged
about the weekly topic.

Community platform needs to handle sharing, centralizing links and standardize tagging. It should be easy and fun to store files, bulk notify, organize by tags and discuss uploaded content. • Getting there is not an all-in-one effort. It must be organic and driven by how the students see themselves doing it. A community needs to evolve at the pace of your audience and grown by how your adopters seek updates to the platform.

  • 10. C O U R S E C O N T E N T What are the most important concepts and skills students should learn in “It’s a Mobile World”? • Mobile habits disrupt the way people shop, research, buy, communicate etc. Usage stats, trends. Social Media and Mobile Behavior are very related. • Mobile context, it’s how/when you do tasks with a mobile that you design /concept against. Purpose driven media/aweness with mobile/social executions. • Internet of Things, digital appliances, maker culture and how mobile design is a part of it. • Mobile unique features (accelerometer, facial recognition, augmented reality and mobile game design) • Must gain skill around prototyping their final assignment with web app tools like InVision or Keynote, GameSalad. • Understanding the difference between HTML 5/ CSS mobile solutions and native apps • Integrated campaign thinking and creating a mobile solution that complements the organizing idea for the campaign (second screen, retail+ experiences)
  • 11. C L A S S L E S S O N S How can the concepts and skills taught be grouped in 9 lessons: 1. Hello World
Orient class framework (like “OMGs”, weekly assignments), share 9-week curriculum, set expectations on prototyping, setup trends and mobile use 2.
Assign students a campaign for a brand (or brand of their choosing) that uses these concepts. Students must present next week. 4. Concept of Augmented Reality
Lots of case studies on apps that use AR, thinking about data real-time data isualization, gaming and even Ikea’s product catalog with AR. Assign students a campaign for a brand (or brand of their choosing) that uses these concepts. Students must present next week. 5. Mobile in Retail & Broadcast
Discuss how behaviors have evolved based on mobile shopping, eg. showrooming. and second screen Case studies on how retail brands like Nordstroms, REI are using mobile/social in retail. Assign students a campaign for a brand (or brand of their choosing) that uses these concepts. Students must present next week.
  • 12. C L A S S L E S S O N S How can the concepts and skills taught be grouped in 9 lessons: 6. Mobile Gaming

  • 13. D E M O N S T R AT I N G T H E C O N C E P T O R S K I L L What material (audio visual) can be shown in class to demonstrate each lesson? • We present mostly every week in the format of a prepared deck or prototype that is shared with the class. • Having a big screen that connects to student’s laptop is important, having the student(s) walk through the presentation as they present the deck is also important. • Users must have a smartphone or tablet to prototype their designs and share free apps to install and try out. • The class also has an extra credit option where students can use Codecademy site
  • 14. R E I N F O R C I N G T H E C O N C E P T O R S K I L L What short activity can be done in class to help students apply the new concept or skill that was presented to them? • We present examples in class that relate to the new concept, case studies prepared for the week as well feedback from in-class participation • We also can brainstorm together using “gamestorming” to ideate and concept as a short activity especially when setting up for an assignment. • Leverage real-time polls like PollEverywhere to have the class answer in a poll with their laptop or mobile phone while in class.
  • 15. A S S I G N M E N T What project can be assigned that will the students to master the lesson and be a possible portfolio piece for the students. • Each class assignment requires a deck of 3 concepts with at least 1 concept with some strategy setup rationale, insight, target and a couple UI examples to support it. Ideally the student will have a prototype example for their favorite. Prototype is required for the final project. • Students are always encouraged to bring in projects into a Mobile World that they are alread working on, want to upgrade through mobile as assignments. • Each assignment in the class (at least about 5 of them) are designed to be inspirations for students to add to their portfolio. • Assignments can be in groups of two or three. For a group of three, all 3 concepts have to be blown out and not limited to 1 since the group has more bandwidth. Many times the group does more than 3 concepts that include assignment updates from previous weeks.
  • 16. R E S O U R C E S What books, websites, blogs, videos or other material will be good references for the students in the course? • I give the students about a list of 20 to 30 awesome sites to have them refer to every week — they can also use their own. The idea is to have them pick their favorite news items “Oh My Gods” to share them with the class that week. • Decks every week by the teacher include more material the student can refer to regarding book material, videos and more sites. • For “It’s a Mobile World”, I highly recommend users download free apps and play with them for their iOS, Android devices. Also, if they don’t have a smartphone, they should search for videos on YouTube showing how the app works. • I also bring in other subject matters to speak as resources that help students get engaged about the weekly topic.
