Trident has developed a new and patented system to convert wave energy directly into electricity. The company is working with the University of Cambridge to optimise the system for the specific wave conditions that exist at the East coast offshore site. Project Deepwater Turbine – with collaborators including the East of Great Yarmouth Lowestoft East of England’s Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture England Science and SLP. The goal is an integrated solution for a 5MW floating London London offshore wind turbine for deepwater deployments of 30-300 metres. The project is funded by the Energy Technologies Institute, a unique partnership between global industries and the UK Government. Cranfield University’s Energy Technology Centre – research embraces Strategic Round 2 and proposed Round 3 power generation and offshore technology; subsea and reliability areas for offshore wind farm development engineering and risk management. University of Cambridge – with one of the largest integrated engineering departments in Europe researching energy, fluid mechanics & turbomachinery as well as electronics, power and energy conversion. TWI – research into innovative fabrication and inspection techniques providing an outstanding resource for the marine energy sector. TWI’s support for wind energy developers includes advanced, high-productivity fabrication technology; specification of corrosion protection standards; structural integrity assessment and failure investigation. Cambridge Consultants – developers of innovative Holographic Infill Radar technology which can differentiate between the movement of turbine blades and other objects, reducing conflict with air traffic control and defence requirements which have previously restricted wind farm sites.
