Unit 73 ig2 assignment creating a sample library 2013_y2
Plan (1)
1. PLAN / DO TO LIST / PROJECT CHARTER
Required: Seven 70’s style inspired posters for each of ToT’s current games.
Firstly, I plan to familiarise myself fully with each of the games in question- Playing, watching gameplay videos, and finding screenshots will be a
good way to do this. From this research I will go on to develop a basic mind map. I will then produce several sketches for each of the games,
thinking about what is involved in each game, including theme, characters and setting, also taking into consideration what kind of content I might
like to include in my posters. At this stage I will research more thoroughly into film posters of the 70s time, as well as fonts I might like to
potentially use. The sketches I produced, will then be scanned, cut and arranged digitally to produce different concepts. Two or three ideas for
posters, for each game will be generated using this method, giving an idea as to the layout / arrangement of the poster. I will then create a survey,
looking at both the target market and to gather people’s opinions. This should provide me with direction and allow me to finalise concepts. I will
also email my commissioner, Tale of Tales, in order to gather feedback. The results of this research will finally be analysed, and presented in a
recorded interview at college. Final ideas will be tweaked according to the feedback gathered, and I will begin production on the final posters.
During this process, I will refer heavily to the 70s posters research from earlier on in the project. The posters themselves will be made up of many
assets drawn traditionally in a watercolour medium. The images will each be brought onto the computer, adjusted and sharpened by drawing over
the images as necessary in Paint Tool SAI. As earlier, all assets will then be cut and arranged digitally in the desired layout. The final posters will be
sent to my commissioner for any final feedback / required modifications, before being printed in high quality on A4, and presented in my
sketchbook. My production log, schedule and blog will be updated weekly throughout this process.
MY COMMISSIONER:
Tale of Tales is a videogames development studio, founded in 2003 and run by Auriea Harvey and Michaël Samyn out of Belgium. Their goal is to
create elegant and emotionally rich interactive entertainment. As artists they focus on beauty and joy. They want to create art for people. That is
why they distribute their work on line, and cheaply. As designers they hope that videogames can be as diverse and meaningful as any other
medium. They want to create playful experiences that appeal to both gamers and non-gamers. They try to design expressive interfaces to access
engaging poetic narratives through simple controls. Both Auriea and Michaël were trained as artists. Auriea studied sculpture at Parson's in New
York and Michael graphic design at Sint Lucas in Ghent, Belgium. They’'ve been using computers since Windows 3.1 and Mac System 7. They met
online in 1999 as members of an online artist collective based around the hell.com domain. They have been collaborating form the very day they
met. At first, as Entropy8Zuper!, on website designs for clients and on internet artworks. Then expanding to other types of interactive projects.
Since 2002 they focus on videogames. Auriea studies traditional figure drawing. And Michaël classical guitar. They live in the beautiful medieval
city of Ghent, Belgium. Strictly speaking, Tale of Tales is just two people. But they have a history of collaboration. In fact it could be said they use
each videogame as an opportunity to reach out to talented people they admire. In some cases these are industry veterans, but often they are
talented artists whom they feel can contribute something of their unique expertise to the medium.
