Media Audiences & ProductsLesson 3 Identifying audiences for media products Monday 27th September 2010
Today’s Objectives Learning Objectives To explain why and how media industries categorise their audiences To devise the audience profile of an existing television show Challenge Objective To use illustrative examples to discuss and explain your audience profile of an existing television show
Today’s Lesson Today’s lesson requires you all to use following TRICS You will also need to use your prior learning – check your exercise books for notes and look at the lesson slides from our previous lessons on my blogspot site.
Assignment Brief – Scenario This is the scenario you have to imagine you are in for all your Tasks for this unit. You are a well trained media researcher working for a major media research company and you are seeking promotion to Senior Researcher. In order to gain the promotion you have been asked to carry out a number of tasks; a presentation with a partner, a detailed analysis of the construction of a media product and finally a mini research task.
Assignment Brief – Task 1 Your Assessment Objective for this unit is to: Know how a media industry identifies audiences for its products. These are the instructions from the Assignment Brief for Task 1 In order to gain your promotion to Senior Researcher you have been asked to team up and produce a presentation. You and your partner must produce a presentation explaining how media industries identify their audiences. You must include information about audience classification and research methods, you must explain the pro’s and con’s of these methods and finally you must find a case study from a particular media industry and explain how they classify their audience and how they carry out research in order to identify audiences for their products.
Task 1 – Grading Criteria In order to achieve a PASS grade in this task you must ensure that you: Outline ways in which a media industry identifies audiences for its product. This means you would simply describe and record the ways a media industry identifies audiences for its product without explaining why, how or giving any examples.
Task 1 – Grading Criteria In order to achieve a MERIT grade in this task you must ensure that you: Describe ways in which a media industry identifies audiences for its products with some detail and with reference to appropriate illustrative examples. This means you would describe the ways a media industry identifies audiences for its product giving some details and using examples
Task 1 – Grading Criteria In order to achieve a DISTINCTION grade in this task you must ensure that you: Explain ways in which a media industry identifies audiences for its products with reference to precise and detailed illustrate examples. This means you would describe an explain the ways a media industry identifies audiences for its product giving appropriate examples that clearly illustrate your explanations.
Task 1 – Instructions Everything you do in this lesson will go towards your first Task so even though I am not in today, make sure you work seriously and put 100% effort into each task. First part of today’s lesson is to get yourselves into pairs which you know will be successful for you. Then you need to check the next slide for the rules you will need to follow for your presentations.
Task 1 – Presentation Rules Your presentation must be at least 10 minutes in length but no longer than 20 minutes Both partners must contribute equally – you must both prepare for it and take part in the presentation itself as you will be graded separately for this task You can use any format to present your information for the presentation but you CANNOT simply read from slides or handouts in your presentation – be creative!!
Learning Objective To explain why and how media industries categorise their audiences Task 1 In the first part of your presentation should explain why media industries categorise their audience. You should use at least two examples here to help illustrate your explanation. Here are some tips: Think about money and advertising revenue – why is it important for media industries to know who their products are aimed at and suitable for? Think about censorship issues – why might it be vital that certain industries classify their products for particular audiences.
Learning Objective To explain why and how media industries categorise their audiences Task 1 In the second part of your presentation should explain how media industries categorise their audience. You should use at least two examples here to help illustrate your explanation. Here are some tips: Think about LL Cool J’s cousin who we talked about last lesson – LL CAGES Explain the different categories that the audience can be split into Use the profile’s you have produced in previous lessons to give examples of how products and produced with specific audience categories in mind
Learning Objective To explain why and how media industries categorise their audiences Task 1 In the next part of your presentation you need to use some of the work you have done with Mr Kirkham. Explain how media industries carry out research into their audience in order to categorise them. Here are some tips: What types of research can media industries carry out into their audience – surveys, questionnaires, interviews, etc.
Learning Objective To devise the audience profile of an existing television show Task 1 This part of your presentation requires you to carry out some secondary research of an existing television show. You must pick one of the following television shows and create an audience profile for that show. The Inbetweeners Prison Break Have I Got News For You Skins Gossip Girl The One Show 24 Eastenders Question Time Match of The Day
Learning Objective To devise the audience profile of an existing television show Task 1 Once you have devised your audience profile for your chosen show you must find examples or arguments to back up each of your decisions. Here are some tips: If you have said the age group for your chosen show is 25-40 then you need to explain why and try to use an example to help illustrate your explanation Try finding comparisons with other similar shows as examples
