WHY “A CHRISTMAS CAROL”?
As a child, Charles Dickens spent a short time in a debtors prison with his
family. Years after his family’s release, Dickens was deeply troubled by society’s
indifference toward the poor. He once wrote, “London is a place where half the
people live without ever knowing how the other half dies.”
ADAPTED BY TOM CREAMER
DIRECTED BY STEVE SCOTT Dickens considered using his national fame as an author to address this lack
of compassion through letters to Parliament but, instead, in 1843 he poured his
passion into the writing of “A Christmas Carol.” This beloved story follows the
transformation of miserly Ebeneezer Scrooge after the spirits of Christmas past,
The Goodman Theatre present, and future confront him with the humanity of what he regarded as “the
surplus population.”
