4. Home break-ins makes you and your family victims. They can
cause long-lasting emotional effect on affected person(s). Taking
simple preventative measures you can reduce the probability of
this happening to you and your family.
First, what makes your home a target?
Most break-ins tend to be opportunistic and not planned.
Thieves select homes that are easy to enter unnoticed. These
are homes without or with little visible security.
Thieves in most cases go around a neighborhood and choose a
house with more security weak spots. Therefore, your home will
have a higher risk of being burglarized if it looks unsecured,
unlived, and offers easy unobserved access.
What will make your home more attractive to
burglars
Valuables on display
Open or unsecured Entries (Doors or Windows)
Lack of perimeter fence
Signs you`re rarely at home
No visible intruder alarm system
Untrimmed hedges around a house
Lacking or poor security lighting
Unlocked side-gates

before you leave. “Leaving Routine” – a simple checklist of all
important activities to do before leaving, will help you not forget

What to do before leaving your home

Close and lock all windows and doors even when stepping out
for a few minutes.
Confirm the side gate is locked
Put away any valuable outside or in display.
Check if garage door is locked

removed.
If going out in the evening draw curtains and leave at least one
light on.
If you`re travelling or you will be away from home for
days

home.
Add anti-climbs on top of the perimeter wall (fence).
Place garbage bins outside for collection to prevent
necessity of people coming in for collections.

Alarm system is undoubtedly the most effective way to
prevent break-in ad deter thieves. An alarm system with a
visible siren box (a sounder and flashing light) is a strong
deterrent to any sensible thief.
Its recommendable to have an alarm that will automatically
alert you (if away from home) and/or authorities to respond
in case of an intrusion at your home. Most home owners
install just a panic alarms which only work if someone is at
home to press panic button. If not ,thieves get in and out
unnoticed.
Advancement in technology has made it possible for home
owners to have modern digital alarm systems at a very
affordable price. Some even have added smart features
and will communicate directly with home owner directly
through a mobile phone and fire safety monitoring through
smoke sensors.
Its critical to ensure your alarm system is well installed and
maintained to make sure it remains effective and reliable
enough to protect your home and family.

8. More than 80% of break-ins occur through doors and windows.
Meaning primarily, thieves use doors and windows to enter and
exit the house. It`s important to know and put up the safest
doors, windows and locks.
Use solid timber for doors and frames with strong hinges and if
need be use strong metallic door especially for ground floor
doors leading outside. Fit a door viewer on front door. For
glazed door use thick and laminated glass. Add internal grilles
if lock can be accessed through broken glass pane.
Windows on the ground floor should have a lock installed.
Metal grilles can be used to permanently lock-out access for
windows at the back and hard to monitor from inside.
When fitting locking systems consider using strong and good
quality dead locks on doors. Modern keyless locks systems is a
better option as they cannot be picked or opened with master
keys. Lock type and strength depends on the entry type and
position in the house.
You should balance security with fire safety. The exits locks
should not hinder easy escape or entry if need be; for example,
front door lock should allow access from outside .

9. Good lighting can successfully deter crime at night. Thieves
don’t like being seen when committing crime. Proper lighting
make them stay away.
Good and spaced compound lighting reduce darkened areas
thieves can hide. Exterior lights should be well positioned and
tamper-proofed to prevent intruders from disabling them.
Install a timer to switch on interior lights when it get dark to
create impression you`re home even when you`re not.
A better though expensive option is motion triggered lights
which lights up which automatically light up when a walking-
by burglar triggers the sensors.
Light-up secluded areas like gate entrance, garage and
backyard to prevent burglars hiding and attacking you while
outside.

11. Not everyone who calls at your door have good intentions. Potential
burglars can pretend to have access inside your home.
Fake callers are burglars who pretend to be someone they are not,
like a electricity technician.
Install an intercom to help you confirm visitors without letting
them inside your compound.
Don’t open door before looking through door viewer or front
window to see who is there.
If someone claims to be from a service company make
unscheduled visit ask ID and call their company to confirm.
Fake ones will not wait.
Distraction burglars works in pairs in that while one is engaging you
the other one is stealing unnoticed.
Be wary if someone suspicious shows up at your door with
petty requests, like asking for directions or water.
If they need something you have to get inside, tell them to wait
outside while you collect it.

12. 1 Assess The Situation
If you find or think there was a
break-in in your house assess
the situation before taking any
action. Thieves might be still in
and may harm you if you
interrupt them.
If you think the thief is still inside or
somewhere close by consider it an
emergency. Call-999 and wait for
police outside at a safe distance.
