The Best Or What’s Left
By Barry Kennedy
Imagine if you will, your best friend comes over to your house. You see that he
is carrying a very nicely wrapped gift. Let’s face it, we start getting excited. After all,
this is your best friend and you know that he would only present you with a great gift.
As this friend approaches, he extends his arms and hands you the gift. With great
enthusiasm you begin to tear into the package, only to find that your friend had given
you his old sneakers. Oh, thank you? You look down to notice that your friend bought
himself a new pair of shoes and gave you the leftovers. Leftovers are not always a bad
thing. Many of us were brought up (i.e. nourished) eating leftovers, but we did not
invite special guests into our houses and offer them leftovers. We wanted them to have
the best, then we would polish off the leftovers the next day. What about spiritual
matters? Do we find ourselves offering God “The Best or What’s Left?”
God Offered Us The Very Best. “In the beginning God created the heaven and
the earth” (Gen 1:1). Everything God made He made for His crowning achievement
man (Genesis 1:29-31). Just look around at the natural beauty God has made. All of
this God made by simply speaking it into existence. What is the point? POWER! God
is omnipotent (Revelation 19:6; Matthew 28:18). He has the power to create such
beauty and splendor and yes, He gave us the very best. Having said that, creation in all
its glory fails to truly emphasize the fact that He gave us the very best. “What shall we
then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? HE THAT SPARED
NOT HIS OWN SON, but delivered him up FOR US ALL, how shall he not with him
also freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:31, 32). Why? The cost of sin. This too goes
back to the beginning of creation when God said, “But of the tree of the knowledge of
good and evil, thou shalt thou not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou
shalt surely die” (Genesis 2:17). Of course, we know that they did eat of the tree
(Genesis 3). God did not strike them dead but instead informed the Serpent that He
would put “enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed;
He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel” (Genesis 3:15 NKJV). The
point is this, Jesus, the Word (John 1:1) was to be that seed of woman; seeing that He
had no earthy father to produce seed (Matthew 1:18). Why? Because our sin required
the perfect gift (Hebrews 9:22). “So, Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many;
and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto
salvation” (Hebrews 9:28).
Jesus was/is not just an angel, prophet, or mere good man. IN fact, the Hebrew
writer emphasized the greatness of our Savior.

interests or are the same age, then they have
something in common and are more likely to listen.
We must never forget the ability that young
Christians have to further the kingdom of God. This
ability is one that we may not know we have until
we are encouraged.
In the Great Commission (Matt. 28: 19-20),
the Lord commanded the apostles to teach every
creature. Not only were they to teach them the
gospel, but they were also to teach them to observe
everything the Lord commanded them. This also
included the command to go and teach. Teens are a
part of “every creature,” which the Lord talked
about; therefore, we have the same responsibility
that every other member of the church has.
If you are a teen reading this article, then
never underestimate the impact that you can make.
Never sell yourself short. If you are an adult,
encourage the young Christians around you to start
being active. Let us all be like Jeremiah in Jeremiah
20:9, who could not help but talk about the Lord
because God’s Word was like a fire in his bones.
Let us always remember who we are and what we
can do through God.

God who at sundry times and in divers manners
spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son,
whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by
whom also he made the worlds; Who being the
brightness of his glory, and the express image of
his person, and upholding all things by the word
of his power, when he had by himself purged our
sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on
high; (Hebrews 1:1-3).
To make his point clearer, the Hebrew writer noted how
that the Christ was “. . .so much better than the angels,
. . .” (Hebrews 1:4). An angel could not be the sacrificial
lamb which takes away our sin (John 1:29). God gave us
the best not what was left. You see God gave Himself
(John 10:11; 10:30; 17:21).
What are we giving God? Can we honestly say
that God gets our best, or are we content to simply give
Him what is left? From the very beginning of time God
has always required the “First-fruits, the lamb without
spot or blemish,” etc. Maybe we need to stop and
remember what He has given for us as well as what He
wants to give us in eternity. If we will, we will never
give God what’s left, but we will give Him our very
BEST.
