HOME IS WHERE. . .
Barry Kennedy
Have you ever noticed how some phrases immediately produce a response? We
hear the beginning of a phrase and we, seemingly without thinking, are able to state the
conclusion to that phrase. Such is the case for the title for this article. No doubt, many of
you saw the title, “Home is Where. . .” and you thought “you hang your hat,” or maybe
it was Home is Where “your heart is.” Either way, you get the point. Some statements
are repeated so often that we automatically recognize them. Speaking of the word home,
did you know that the word home is found fifty-one times in the King James Version of
the Bible? That being said, where is our home. Home is where you hang your hat. To
make this statement, and mean it, requires a number of certain characteristics.
First, one must have a great level of contentment. We all know of the “little
bird” who flies the coop, only to return missing the comforts and familiarities of home.
Contentment is a godly characteristic that many of us would do well to develop. The
apostle Paul put it this way, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we
brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out” (1 Timothy
6:6, 7). The necessities are all that matters to the pilgrim passing through. One beautiful
aspect of Christianity is that God has promised to provide those necessities to those who
are willing to put His kingdom and righteousness first (Matthew 6:33).
Second, one must be willing to let go of some things he may hold dear.
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”
(Hebrews 11:1). These words begin one of the greatest lists of faithful servants of God
that has ever been written. However, what does this have to do with letting go of some
things we may hold dear? Imagine Abel saying, “God I really like this lamb” (cf.
Hebrews 11:4). Could I just offer You something a little less valuable? Enoch was
translated, that he should not die because he walked with God (Hebrews 11:5). No one
could imagine Enoch saying, “God, I believe that I’ll pass on that translation, I really
enjoy life and can’t imagine how anything could be better.” The list goes on and on, and
yet not one of these listed in Hebrews eleven were willing to hold on to the things of
this world, no matter how dear to them those things may have been.
Third, one must be willing to take hold of the fact that God knows best.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the
LORD” (Isaiah 55:8). How easy it would have been for Abram (later called Abraham
Genesis 17:5) to have questioned God concerning God’s call for him to leave home
(Genesis 12:1ff). After all, Ur was Abram’s home. No doubt he had friends there, and
we know from the text that his family was still living in that city. God did not so much

(Deut. 17:10)

as tell Abram where they were going, and yet he still
went. Why? Abram (and the others listed in Hebrews
eleven) was holding on to a fact that very few people
ever learn. “But now they desire a better country, that
is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be
called their God: for he hath prepared for them a
city” (Hebrews 11:16). Who could know anything
better than the Creator of all things? “The foolishness
of God is wiser than the wisest of men” (1 Corinthians
1:25). The question we must ask ourselves is, “Are we
willing to listen to what God has to say?” Many would
say, “Yes!” However, the truth is that few are willing
to read and study His word; therefore, they are not
willing to listen to what He has to say.
John wrote about how powerful the Word is,
not to mention how much it is needed. “My little
children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.
And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the
Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” (1 John 2:1). The
phrase “Home is where you hang your hat” is very
applicable for the child of God, who
UNDERSTANDS CONTENTMENT; is willing to
LET GO OF SOME THINGS HE MAY HOLD
DEAR; and is willing to TAKE HOLD OF THE
FACT THAT GOD KNOWS BEST. If we aspire to
live this close to the Lord, we can easily make any
place that we hang our hat a home. As the classic
hymns say, “here we are but straying pilgrims,” and
this world is not our home, for we are just passing
through. We must ask ourselves “Are our treasures
truly laid up somewhere beyond the blue?”

East main informer, 11 6-18

  • 1. 4 Hugh Vol. 43 November 6, 2018 Number 44 HOME IS WHERE. . . Barry Kennedy Have you ever noticed how some phrases immediately produce a response? We hear the beginning of a phrase and we, seemingly without thinking, are able to state the conclusion to that phrase. Such is the case for the title for this article. No doubt, many of you saw the title, “Home is Where. . .” and you thought “you hang your hat,” or maybe it was Home is Where “your heart is.” Either way, you get the point. Some statements are repeated so often that we automatically recognize them. Speaking of the word home, did you know that the word home is found fifty-one times in the King James Version of the Bible? That being said, where is our home. Home is where you hang your hat. To make this statement, and mean it, requires a number of certain characteristics. First, one must have a great level of contentment. We all know of the “little bird” who flies the coop, only to return missing the comforts and familiarities of home. Contentment is a godly characteristic that many of us would do well to develop. The apostle Paul put it this way, “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out” (1 Timothy 6:6, 7). The necessities are all that matters to the pilgrim passing through. One beautiful aspect of Christianity is that God has promised to provide those necessities to those who are willing to put His kingdom and righteousness first (Matthew 6:33). Second, one must be willing to let go of some things he may hold dear. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1). These words begin one of the greatest lists of faithful servants of God that has ever been written. However, what does this have to do with letting go of some things we may hold dear? Imagine Abel saying, “God I really like this lamb” (cf. Hebrews 11:4). Could I just offer You something a little less valuable? Enoch was translated, that he should not die because he walked with God (Hebrews 11:5). No one could imagine Enoch saying, “God, I believe that I’ll pass on that translation, I really enjoy life and can’t imagine how anything could be better.” The list goes on and on, and yet not one of these listed in Hebrews eleven were willing to hold on to the things of this world, no matter how dear to them those things may have been. Third, one must be willing to take hold of the fact that God knows best. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD” (Isaiah 55:8). How easy it would have been for Abram (later called Abraham Genesis 17:5) to have questioned God concerning God’s call for him to leave home (Genesis 12:1ff). After all, Ur was Abram’s home. No doubt he had friends there, and we know from the text that his family was still living in that city. • 2. --article continued from page 1-- as tell Abram where they were going, and yet he still went. Why? Abram (and the others listed in Hebrews eleven) was holding on to a fact that very few people ever learn. “But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city” (Hebrews 11:16). Who could know anything better than the Creator of all things? “The foolishness of God is wiser than the wisest of men” (1 Corinthians 1:25). The question we must ask ourselves is, “Are we willing to listen to what God has to say?” Many would say, “Yes!” However, the truth is that few are willing to read and study His word; therefore, they are not willing to listen to what He has to say. John wrote about how powerful the Word is, not to mention how much it is needed. “My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:” (1 John 2:1). The phrase “Home is where you hang your hat” is very applicable for the child of God, who UNDERSTANDS CONTENTMENT; is willing to LET GO OF SOME THINGS HE MAY HOLD DEAR; and is willing to TAKE HOLD OF THE FACT THAT GOD KNOWS BEST. If we aspire to live this close to the Lord, we can easily make any place that we hang our hat a home. As the classic hymns say, “here we are but straying pilgrims,” and this world is not our home, for we are just passing through. We must ask ourselves “Are our treasures truly laid up somewhere beyond the blue?” TO BE CONTINUED. . . . . .
