Networks of
patients and information
are changing how value
can flow in medicine
How can it be
that the most useful
and relevant and
up-to-the-minute information
can exist outside of
traditional channels?
Because of the Web,
Patients Can Connect to Information
and Each Other (and other Providers)
This is a (licensed) generic diagram of a
network of people. The connections act
like capillaries, through which
information can flow – just like a nutrient.
Health 1.0
was like the early web – “read only.”
A few people could publish things, but
ordinary people couldn’t put anything online.
There was no Facebook, no blogs, just
“brochureware” – articles and publicity.

 This dotted line is the “membrane”
between the establishment and the
public.
All knowledge lived above the line,
and was dispensed through a one-way
arrow.
In Health 2.0…
…the two circles have moved
closer together: sometimes the
patient & family bring useful
knowledge to the transaction.
The two parties still aren’t the
same, but it’s more of a two way
street.
(This never happens in places
where people believe it’s not
possible!)

the intelligence of its users.” – Tim O’Reilly

(This diagram doesn’t yet show that
the circles aren’t equivalent – a
surgeon is different from a caregiver,
etc. That would be a good
enhancement to add.)
Today we understand…
…that this works because the patient and
family can bring their network to the
discussion.
In fact everyone does.
Like everything else today, medicine has
become a network of networks.
