This is a presentation held at eLiberatica 2009. http://www.eliberatica.ro/2009/ One of the biggest events of its kind in Eastern Europe, eLiberatica brings community leaders from around the world to discuss about the hottest topics in FLOSS movement, demonstrating the advantages of adopting, using and developing Open Source and Free Software solutions. Introduction
Air quality is a major issue for all the important cities in the world.
Bucharest is no exception. The air pollution in Bucharest, due to
traffic and industry, is abundant, especially in areas the human
population is concentrated. The fast rate of economic growth is
bringing more sources of air pollution.

AIRAWARE Project
AIRAWARE project, funded in the EU LIFE framework, is aiming to
build a pilot air quality monitoring and forecasting system to ensure a
sustainable development of the rapidly expansive urban areas in
Bucharest, minimizing and preventing the air pollution impact on
human health.

Project partners
The AIRAWARE system users list include the main local and national
authorities in the domain of air quality monitoring, forecasting, air
pollution abatement and mitigation of impacts, such as:
• National Meteorological Administration
• Regional Environmental Protection Agency of Bucharest
• Direction for Public Health of Bucharest
• Centre for Urban Planning of Bucharest
• Institute of Biology of the Romanian Academy
• Meteo-France (as strategic European partner)

Graphical interface
The web interface was designed according with end-users needs. The
goal is to obtain a simple and friendly environment for air quality
spatial data management. The webmapping interface has the
following outline:
• The central map contains the cartographic representation of the
spatial data stored in the GIS database.
• The overview map facilitates the user orientation and provides a
mechanism for interactively re-centering the main map to a point
selected with a simple mouse click.
• The layers list is used to determine the way the map is composed
and displayed.
• The toolbar contains all the instruments needed for map navigation,
database search, feature selection, buffer creation. The functionality
of these tools is very similar with the one contained in every GIS
desktop application.

On 26 and 27 January 2016, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission invited international experts for a two-day workshop in Ispra (Italy) in order to discuss data and service infrastructures for Citizen Science. The participants were challenged to: - identify the major requirements for Citizen Science project repositories and their relation to existing Citizen Science platforms; - draft a reference model for analysing and sharing Citizen Science tools and data – with first examples; - define a high-level roadmap with checkpoints for synchronising already ongoing activities. Now days organizations are making available data (e.g. vector data, rasters) via web services, that follow open standards and are easier to integrate with other data. Validation of these services is important to guarantee that clients (e.g. web portals, mobile applications) can properly discover and download the data that a user needs. Validation can also serve as curation process to improve discovery on registries [1][2] or for certification purposes [3]. This session will provide an overview and a demo of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Validation tools. The participants will understand how to invoke a test and install the tools in their own environment. The validation tools are used to test servers, data and clients. The tests can be customized to not only test implementations against OGC standards but also community profiles. The validation engine and the tests are available as open source in GitHub. The 1st anniversary of ESA’s Business Incubation Centre in Portugal was commemorated in November 19 at the Pedro Nunes Institute with a presentation of results and startups supported so far, and a space cake, of course! The Business Incubation Centre of the European Space Agency in Portugal (ESA BIC Portugal), coordinated by Instituto Pedro Nunes, was released in late 2014, being one of the 13 current ESA incubators in Europe. Up today, ESA BIC Portugal has selected six startups (Active Aerogels, Airborne Projects, D-Orbit PT, Eye2Map, InanoE and Space Layer Technologies), and less than half a year, it has already reached the goals set for the first year. In the five-year period - duration of the program - the ESA BIC Portugal provides incubate 30 companies that will create about 240 new jobs and raise an expected capital ofg € 6.5 million. The ESA BIC Portugal is a direct investment in Portugal of € 1,950,000 (one million nine hundred and fifty thousand euros) in five years. This program is led by the IPN and has poles in UPTEC and DNA Cascais agency. The ESA BIC Portugal has the support of the Portuguese Space Office (FCT / ANI) and other stakeholders, such as CCDRC, universities, municipalities and investors. In the anniversary, we had representative of the European Space Agency (ESA), Pedro Nunes (IPN), National Innovation Agency (ANI / Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), Science and Technology Park, University of Porto (UPTEC ), DNA Cascais and Coordination Center and Regional Development Commission (CCDRC).
