Is Gamification an Art or Science or Both?
The recentsad deathof JohnNash, the man behindthe film“BeautifulMind”whichstarredRussell Crowe bringsintofocusthe
relationshipbetweenArtandScience.Nash’smostcelebratedworkwasbasedongame theory.He was able torepresentin
mathematical formthe dynamicsof humanrivalrywhichisatthe heartof our humanity.
However,if we analyse whatattributesdefine the world’sbestsportspersonalitiesingamessuchassoccer, snooker, cricket and
golf we can considertheirskillsintermsof an abilitytotranslate physical andmathematical formulaeintoresults.A topsnooker
playerusesangles, spinandmomentumineveryshot.Golf professionalshave toaccountforthe windandthe resistance and
contoursof grass surfaces.Cricketplayersuse weatherconditionstoswingthe ball andtimingtoscore runs. All of these abilities
couldbe regardedas interpretationsof scientificformulae andyetwe understandablysee the mastersof these gamesasartistsor
wizardsable toconjure the impossible,heroeswhotranscendsporttoan extradimension.
It isthe challengesandskillsof gameswhichengage humanbeingsasplayersorspectatorsandinfluenceourbehaviours,
passions,perceptionsanddevelopmentinwayswhichfew otherhumanactivitiescan hope toachieve.Gamesare activitieswhich
are enteredintovoluntarilyandbasedonintrinsicmotivation –the pleasure,enjoymentandemotionsgeneratedbyour
involvement.Asthe rapidlydevelopingdisruptiveandubiquitoustechnologiesincreasinglygive usinstantaccesstoproductsand
serviceswhichmeetourdailyneeds, sothe physical andmental challengesof life are dramaticallyreducing. We have fewerand
fewerjobswhichrequire hardmanual effortand,inthe 21st
century, there will be arapiddecline inthe numberof jobswhich
require mental effort.Machinesandartificial intelligence are providingsuperiorandmore costeffectivesolutionstoactivitiesthat
were once mankind’ssole domain.
All thisposesthe questionof mankind’sfuture. Will machinesandartificial intelligencetriggeradecline inmankind’sphysical and
mental capacityor will ourhumanityfindwaystoextendanddevelopourcapacityinwayswhichmachinesandcomputersmay
nevertrulycompete.Ourphysical andmental superioritymayhave beenovertakenbytechnologybuthumanshave soulsand

Thisbringsus back to ask whetherGamification, whichreliesonknownandprovenfactorstoengage andinfluencehuman
development, isascience oran art. Are those individualswhoare the mostsuccessful atshapingandinfluencingthe worldw e live
inscientistsorartistsor are theyan indefinableamalgamof artand science?
My ownviewis thatGamificationisamagical blendof science andart that few people are genuinelyblessedwith –those Games
Masters of Societywho, intheirchosenfield, are like the sportinggeniuseswe admire andfollow, instinctivelyable toassess
situationsimmediatelyandact witha mathematical precisionandcomplexitythatonlyhumanscanhope to reproduce.
