In recentmonths, anumberof technologyluminarieshave voicedconcernsaboutthe potential threatof Artificial Intelligence,
echoingthe final chapterof mybook“Gadgets to God”. Bill Gatesisquotedas saying(1) :-
"I am inthe campthat is concerned aboutsuper intelligence," Gatessaidinresponse to a questionabout the existential threat
posed byAI. "First, the machineswill do a lotof jobsfor us and not be super intelligent.Thatshouldbe positiveif we manageit
well. A few decades after that, though, the intelligenceisstrong enoughto be a concern."
Microsoft'sco-founderjoinsalistof science andindustrynotables,includingfamedphysicistStephenHawkingandInternet
innovatorElonMusk,in callingoutthe potential threatfrommachinesthatcanthinkforthemselves. ElonMusk,billionaire
founderof Space X, inOctober2014 calledAIdevelopment "summoningthedemon," andhas investedinthe space tokeephis
eye onit. Stephen Hawking, writingforThe IndependentinMay2014, alsoexpressedhisconcerns. "Whereastheshort-term
impactof AI depends onwho controlsit, the long-termimpactdependson whether it can be controlledat all," Hawkingwrote.
More recently (2), inan interview withthe AustralianFinancial Review, Steve Wozniak,co-Founderof Apple, joinedBillGates,
StephenHawkingandElon Muskby makinghisowncasuallyapocalypticwarningaboutmachinessupersedingthe humanrace.
"Like peopleincludingStephenHawking andElon Muskhave predicted, I agree that the future isscary and very bad forpeople,"
Wozniaksaid. "Ifwe buildthese devices to take care of everything forus, eventuallythey'll thinkfaster than us andthey'll get
rid of the slowhumansto run companiesmore efficiently."
