AES 2014 K-3 Summer Reading
1. AES Summer Reading 2014 for Rising K-3 Grade Students
Dear Parents and Students,
Reading practice creates not only stronger readers but also lifelong readers. Research indicates students
who do not read over the course of the summer run the risk of losing ground in their reading achievement.
Students are encouraged to enjoy quality literature and to continue developing their independent reading skills.
This summer AES students are encouraged to play Read-O, which is similar to Bingo. Each square on the board
has a genre to read and can be filled out once it has been read. When students have completed a row (5 squares
horizontally, vertically, or diagonally), they earn tea with their lunch. Students who complete 2 rows earn tea with
lunch and get to wear a hat on a designated day. Students who complete 3 rows earn tea with lunch, hat day, and
dessert at lunch. All Read-O cards must be turned in by Friday, September 5th
in order to receive these
incentives which will be given from September 15- 17.
Reading Incentives:
Monday, September 15th
- “Reading is Tea-rrific!” Students will be able to have tea with their lunch.
Tuesday, September 16th
“Hats On for Reading!” Students will be able to wear a hat to school.
Wednesday, September 17th
: “Reading is Sweet!” Students will receive a dessert for lunch.

There are many more examples than the ones listed above. Just remember that the row of 5 squares that students
complete can be diagonal, horizontal, or vertical. Students who complete 3 rows of 5 squares will receive all of
the reading incentives on September 15th
-September 17th
.
Students can also read books online. AES Follett Shelf eBooks are available by visiting
https://wbb20247.follettshelf.com. Students will use aestudent for the username and password to log in.
Students are also encouraged to visit the local Horry County Memorial libraries. In addition to the Read-O card,
there are other opportunities available to students throughout the summer.
• All Horry County public libraries are sponsoring Fizz Boom Read, a free children’s summer
reading program. Children who register, read a minimum of 10 hours, and return their
completed reading log to the library will receive a summer reading certificate and a reading
medal.
• Barnes & Noble has a summer reading program called Imagination’s Destination. Students
may read any eight books and record them on their reading journal, which can be downloaded
and printed from their website. Once they bring the completed reading journal
to a Barnes & Noble store, students may select a free book from a selected list
of books. For more information, visit http://www.bn.com/summerreading.

Oh, the Places You’ll Read- Take a picture of your summer reading and email it to Mrs. Wells at
rwells@horrycountyschools.net, and you could be featured on the AES Facebook page. Some ideas could be you
reading on a family vacation, at the pool, ballpark, or your favorite summer reading spot.
