Proverbs 20 1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is
raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not
wise.
It seems hard to believe that men of the greatest
abilities, as well as the ignorant, should render
themselves fools and madmen, merely for the taste
or excitement produced by strong liquors.
Matthew Henry Concise Bible Commentary.
3. 3
Alcohol acts as a sedative on the central nervous
system, which explains the impaired speech,
vision, coordination, and concentration. But the
part of the brain it affects the most is the part
responsible for behavior and emotion. Your sense
of judgment is weakened, and suddenly speaking
your mind doesn't seem so bad. You feel braver
since your socially conditioned safety stops or
filters are circumvented. This is why drunken
people sometimes think they're OK to drive.

4. 4
Alcohol lowers our inhibitions, and people will do
things when drinking they would not do sober.
No one knows before they begin to drink
whether they will become an alcoholic.
It is a sin to get drunk.
The wiser course is to never drink.
I know this is building fences, but good fences
can be an asset to living a blessed life.
5. 5
2 The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion:
whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his
own soul.
You don’t want to make people mad; they may
get even; you surely don’t want to make
powerful people mad; they can harm you.
Breaking his laws makes a king mad.
God’s people should not be outlaws;
It’s a poor representation of our Lord.
6. 6
3 It is an honor for a man to cease from strife: but
every fool will be meddling.
Some people enjoy the emotion of anger;
strife stirs up that emotion.
They will not overlook an insult, and in fact they
will get angry about imagined insults.
Let us not be angry people.
7. 7
Be careful not to be overly sensitive.
Hurt feelings are a form of anger.
Love is not easily angered;
Love does not hold grudges. 1 Cor 13:5
Let us love one another with pure hearts, fervently.
1 Peter 1:22
8. 8
4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold;
therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.
Some people have many excuses not to work.
They will not reap the payday.
9. 9
5 Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water;
but a man of understanding will draw it out.
It is often hard to know and understand the
thoughts and intentions of a person’s heart.
But we can often help them as well as
ourselves, if we take the time to pull those
hidden thoughts out.
That’s what a good counselor does.
10. 10
6 Most men will proclaim every one his own
goodness: but a faithful man who can find?
The first half of this verse is made clear
by the second half.
Faithfulness is the root of goodness.
An unfaithful person is not a blessing, no matter
how good they may be at times.
Let’s be dependable in all things.
11. 11
7 The just man walketh in his integrity: his children
are blessed after him.
Our behavior reveals our true character.
It is a blessing to have a
righteous daddy, because
children learn from the
example of their parents.
We must walk the walk,
and not just talk the talk.
