2 Samuel 14 1 Now Joab the
son of Zeruiah perceived that
the king's heart was toward
Absalom.
David longed for Absalom.
He bears a lot of responsibility for Absalom’s sin.
If David had punished Amnon, it all might have
ended without murder.

2 And Joab sent to
Tekoah, and fetched
thence a wise
woman, and said unto
her, I pray thee, feign
thyself to be a
mourner, and put on now
mourning apparel, and
anoint not thyself with
oil, but be as a woman
that had a long time
mourned for the dead:
It’s all an act to make a
point to the king.

3 And come to the king, and
speak on this manner unto him.
So Joab put the words in her
mouth. 4 And when the woman
of Tekoah spake to the king,*
she fell on her face to the
ground, and did obeisance, and
said, Help, O king. 5 And the
king said unto her, What aileth
thee? And she answered, I am
indeed a widow woman, and
mine husband is dead.

6 And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two
strove together in the field, and there was none to
part them, but the one smote the other, and slew
him. 7 And, behold, the whole family is risen
against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him
that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the
life of his brother whom he slew; and we will
destroy the heir also: and so they shall quench my
coal which is left (take away my source of support),
and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor
remainder (surviving sons) upon the earth.
Not premeditated murder

(TLB) 8 "Leave it with me," the king told her. "I’ll
see to it that no one touches him." 9 "Oh, thank
you, my lord," she replied. "And I’ll take the
responsibility if you are criticized for helping me
like this."
10 "Don’t worry about that!" the king replied. "If
anyone objects, bring him to me; I can assure you
he will never complain again!"
11 Then she said, "Please swear to me by God that
you won’t let anyone harm my son. I want no more
bloodshed." "I vow by God," he replied, "that not a
hair of your son’s head shall be disturbed!"

(TLB) 12 "Please let me ask one more thing of
you!" she said.
"Go ahead," he replied. "Speak!“
13 "Why don’t you do as much for all the people of
God as you have promised to do for me?" she
asked. "You have convicted yourself in making this
decision, because you have refused to bring home
your own banished son.”
That’s the point that Joab wanted made.
He wants David to feel that he should
bring Absalom home.

(TLB) 14 All of us must die eventually; our lives are
like water that is poured out on the ground -- it can’t
be gathered up again. But God will bless you with a
longer life if you will find a way to bring your son
back from his exile.
15 But I have come to plead with you for my son
because my life and my son’s life have been
threatened, and I said to myself, 16 ’Perhaps the king
will listen to me and rescue us from those who would
end our existence in Israel. 17 Yes, the king will give us
peace again.’ I know that you are like the angel of God
and can discern good from evil. May God be with
you." Flattery

18 Then the king answered and said unto the
woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing
that I shall ask thee. And the woman said, Let my
lord the king now speak. 19 And the king said, Is
not the hand of Joab with thee in all this?
David saw through the
subterfuge, but he doesn’t really
mind.They are trying to get him to do what
he already wants to do in his heart.

19b And the woman answered and said, As thy soul
liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right
hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king
hath spoken: for thy servant Joab, he bade me, and
he put all these words in the mouth of thine
handmaid:

11. 11
(TLB) 20 He did it in order to place the matter
before you in a different light. But you are as wise
as an angel of God, and you know everything that
happens!" 21 So the king sent for Joab and told
him, "All right, go and bring back Absalom."
Joab got what he wanted, but it won’t bless
him at all.
Oftentimes we would be better off not to get
what we think we want.
Only God knows what’s really best;
We need to trust Him to do the best.

12. 12
22 And Joab fell to the ground on
his face, and bowed himself, and
thanked the king: and Joab
said, Today thy servant knoweth
that I have found grace in thy
sight, my lord, O king, in that the
king hath fulfilled the request of
his servant. 23 So Joab arose and
went to Geshur, and brought
Absalom to Jerusalem.

13. 13
24 And the king said, Let
him turn to his own
house, and let him not see
my face. So Absalom
returned to his own
house, and saw not the
king's face.
He’s home, but still out of favor with the king.
Absalom will not be content.
He will cause trouble.

14. 14
We continue to see the sorrow and
trouble in King David’s family.
He was a very successful ruler of Israel,
But a very unsuccessful husband and daddy.
A home of love, joy, and peace
does not just happen.

15. 15
A loving daddy and mama reassure
and bring joy to their children.

16. 16
Men need to become MEN – men of God.
No longer boys playing with their buds and their toys,
But leading their families in the Way of God.

17. 17
A family man can no longer live
like a teenager.
To God, his wife, his
children, his church.
Family
devotions
Taking his family
to the foot of the
cross in prayer.

18. 18
Husbands and wives need to grow up.
They must learn to think last of self.
Pulling together
Not each going his
own way.
Determined!
