2. Background
• Carlsbad Unified School District faces projected fiscal deficit of
approximately $7.8 million in 2012-13 and an even larger
deficit in 2013-14
• Governing Board approved formation of School Closure
committee on November 9th to recommend two schools for
February 7, 2012
closure and potential relocation of District Office
• Initial timeline for recommendation was February 2012

• Previous estimates projected potential savings of $400,000

12. Recommendation
• It is respectfully recommended that the Board of Trustees
• Approve formation of a Superintendent’s School Closure Advisory
Committee to focus on Buena Vista Elementary and Carlsbad
Village Academy.
• Extend the timeline timeline for the Advisory Committee
February 7, 2012
recommendation to the School Board be extended until May to
provide adequate time for a thorough process
• We engage the services of a consultant to facilitate the process
and serve as a technical resource.
