This document discusses how machines and automation will impact jobs and employment. It introduces the concepts of necessary trusted service level (NTSL) and levels of automation (LOA) to analyze which job tasks can be automated and which require human skills. The model presented argues that jobs of the future will rely on man-machine collaboration, with machines handling routine tasks and data processing while humans focus on skills like creativity, social interaction and contextual thinking. The document provides examples of companies adopting this approach and outlines a five step process for organizations to develop strategies balancing technological progress with meaningful employment.

WHY MACHINES WILL TAKE OUR JOBS
HOW WE CAN MANAGE THIS

businesses…
The digital transformation paradox
the more likely we introduce
tech that will disrupt
employment…
And by doing that, we are
impacting the very fabric of our
economy and society

23. The Necessary Trusted Service Level
(NTSL)
The Necessary Trusted Service Level
of a job or task is the level of
service that an organization,
customer or user expects/accepts
from the outcome of a job or task. It
is thereby the sum of the activities
done by a human and a machine to
complete the job or task.
NTSL = FUNCTION + EMOTION
25. The Level Of Automation (LOA)
The Level of Automation is the level
to which a job or task can be
automated. We distinct 5 levels of
automation that are generic for all
tasks. 0 being the least automated
and 5 being the most automated.
LOA 0: no automation, 100%
manual tasks
26. The Level of Automation is the level
to which a job or task can be
automated. We distinct 5 levels of
automation that are generic for all
tasks. 0 being the least automated
and 5 being the most automated.
LOA 1: Machine usage as a dumb
tool (e.g. text processing, …), mainly
manual tasks
The Level Of Automation (LOA)
27. The Level of Automation is the level
to which a job or task can be
automated. We distinct 5 levels of
automation that are generic for all
tasks. 0 being the least automated
and 5 being the most automated.
LOA 2: Recommendations (e.g. in
shopping, social media, …) help
human tasks to be faster and more
relevant
The Level Of Automation (LOA)
28. The Level of Automation is the level
to which a job or task can be
automated. We distinct 5 levels of
automation that are generic for all
tasks. 0 being the least automated
and 5 being the most automated.
LOA 3: Machine adds value to the
prepare work but human tasks are
needed to complete it

29. The Level of Automation is the level
to which a job or task can be
automated. We distinct 5 levels of
automation that are generic for all
tasks. 0 being the least automated
and 5 being the most automated.
LOA 4: work is done mainly by
machine, human tasks are focussed
on validation, guidance and approval
The Level Of Automation (LOA)
30. The Level of Automation is the level
to which a job or task can be
automated. We distinct 5 levels of
automation that are generic for all
tasks. 0 being the least automated
and 5 being the most automated.
LOA 5: 100% automation, our jobs
will be oriented at the pure “human
smarts” to complement machines that
are autonomous
