The Estonian Song and Dance Festival

2.  The Estonian Song and Dance Festival is the festive
reunion of an ancient folk, gathering from the cities as
well as from the countryside; small as a nation, but
impressively large as a family.

3.  Song and Dance Celebration is a true Estonian holiday, the
Holy Day of the Heart.

4.  The Estonian Song and Dance Festival
is one of the largest amateur choral
events in the world

5.  Thejoint choir has usually comprised
25,000 singer,
while in 2009, there were more than 30,000
participants performing to an audience of 80,000

6.  The tradition of the
song festival was
born along with
Estonian national
awakening. The first
national song festival
was held in Tartu in
the summer of 1869

organisers of the
first song festival
was Johann
Voldemar Jannsen

8.  Inthe first three festivals only men's
choirs and brass orchestras participated.
Starting with the fourth festival, mixed
choirs were also participating. Starting
with the sixth festival in 1896, the
festival tradition moved to Tallinn

9.  „The Song Festival“ started as a choir contest, but in
1934 a folk dance festival took place at the same
time. Later, it became customary for the two festivals
to be held simultaneously, supplementing and
illuminating each other.

10.  InNovember 2003, UNESCO declared
Estonias’s Song and Dance Festival
tradition a masterpiece of the Oral and
Intangible Heritage of Humanity
