2. Topic-History of computer
Discovery of computer.
First Generation of computer.
Second Generation of computer.
Third Generation of computer.
Fourth Generation of computer.
Fifth Generation of computer.
3. Discovery of computer
1804 British inventor, Charles Babbage.
He designed an all-purpose problem-solving machine.
The difference engine, which had a mechanical memory to
store the results of calculations.
So he is called the father of computer.
4. First Generation of computer
(1940-1956)
Used the Vacuum tubes for circuity.
Used the Magnetic drums for Memory.
Relied on Machine Language.
Input was based on Punched cards.
Output was displayed on Printouts.
UNIVAC (Universal automatic computer)
5.
UNIVAC, The first commercial computer.
ENIAC (Electronic Numerical integrator and computer)
ENIAC, First electronic computer.
6. Second Generation computer
(1956-1963)
Transistors replace vacuum tubes.
The transistor was far superior to the vacuum
tubes.
Still relied on punched card for input &printout
for output.
High level language were also being developed
at this time, such as early versions of COBOL
and FORTRAN
7. Third Generation computer
(1964-1971)
used integrated circuits (IC's) in place of
transistors
The IC's was invented by Jack Kilbey.
In this generation remote processing, time-
sharing,multi-programming operating system
were used.
Some types are:1)IBM-360 series 2)Honeywell-
6000 series 3)PDP(Personal Data Processor)
4) IBM-370/168. 5) TDC-316
8. Fourth Generation computer
(1971-1980)
used Very Large Scale Integrated (VLSI)
circuits.
VLSI circuits having about 5000 transistors.
In this generation time sharing, real time,
networks, distributed operating system were
used. All the high-level languages like C, C++,
DBASE etc., were used in this generation.
Some computer of this generation are:
star 1000,CRAY-1(Super Computer) .
9. Fifth Generation computer
(1980-till date)
In the fifth generation, the VLSI technology became
ULSI (Ultra Large Scale Integration) technology,
resulting in the production of microprocessor chips
having ten million electronic components. This
generation is based on parallel processing hardware
and AI (Artificial Intelligence) software. AI is an
emerging branch in computer science, which
interprets means and method of making computers
think like human beings. All the high-level languages
like C and C++, Java, .Net etc.,
Some computer of its type are:Desktop, laptop
notebook.
