Child’s first Dental Visit?

2. There happens to many milestones in a child’s life. From
their first word to their first step! Similarly the eruption of
the first teeth in a child’s mouth is a major milestone for
the child.
The baby teeth or primary teeth are pioneers in the
development of healthy permanent teeth.

4. When Should My Child First See a Dentist?
• The first dental visit of a child should be scheduled at the
time when the tooth erupts or no later than his/her first
birthday.
• Visiting the dentist at an early age is an essential part of
children’s health care.
• These visits are important for the detection and treatment
of early childhood tooth decay and a valuable opportunity
to educate parents on the key aspects of oral health.

• After all, decay can occur as soon as teeth appear. Bringing
your child to the dentist at an early often leads to a lifetime
of good oral care habits and acclimates the child to the

12. How to protect the child’s oral health at home?
• Parents should typically provide oral hygiene care until the
child is old enough to take personal responsibility for the
daily dental health routine of brushing and flossing.
• A proper regimen of preventive home care is important
from the day a child is born.
• Cleaning of the gums for infants with a clean, damp cloth
after each feed.

13. • As soon as the first teeth come in, begin brushing them
with a soft, small tooth brush and water. Begin using
toothpaste after consulting with the dentist.
• Try weaning off your child by one year of age, to prevent
any nursing bottle caries or misalignment caused due to
sucking.
• Monitor excessive sucking of pacifiers, fingers or thumb.
Nap time feeding should not be encouraged.

14. • Brushing twice a day under parental supervision, using pea
sized fluoride tooth paste.
• Help a young child brush at night, the most important time
to brush, due to lower salivary flow and higher
susceptibility to cavities.
• Usually by age of 5 or so, the child can learn to brush
without parental guidance.

it difficult to chew, causing children to reject food.

17. What toothpaste to use for the child?
• Many children’s toothpastes are flavored with child-
pleasing taste to further encourage brushing. Seal of
acceptance from the IDA should be looked for on the
toothpaste.
• This indicates that the toothpaste has met the criterion for
safety and effectiveness by the IDA.
• Age recommended toothpastes to be used.

19. Shall children use mouthwash?
• Generally, mouthwashes are not recommended in children
who are incapable of spitting and rinsing.
• In older children fluoride mouth rinse can help prevent
decay and cavities but only in addition with brushing.
Rinsing after meals with water is mandatory.

• Fluoride is safe for children. Fluoride is a natural mineral
