- To let people know about my practice situation, I’m in full time private practice…. One of the most common questions I get is this – How do I have time for all of this? I hope that comes out in the course of my talk. Don’t get me wrong. The point of this talk is NOT to talk you into doing everything that I do in social media. Family Physicians need to know about this stuff and I think there is a great opportunity to tell the story of Family Medicine…
- Social Media are websites or places on the internet when the users themselves generate the content (user generated content) – AND – where the users can interact with the content (comment, thumbs up, etc)
- Social media is all over the news these days. From natural disasters like Irene to political uprisings like in Egypt at the beginning of the year. Don’t get me wrong. The point of this talk is not for you to get on social media today. I think Family Physicians need to be aware of social media. Why?
- Don’t forget about mobile. Every day in my office I have patients bring in material from the internet
- Patients are using social media to tell their story. Kerri Sparling. Insulin Pump.
- During 2011, there has been a lot of discussion about facebook friending of patients. I’m selective. I more point physicians into making a facebook page for their practice or clinic.
- No official guidance from AAFP or AMA on this point – Yet.
- My social media story: Began reading blogs 2005. I really think that Family Physicians have a story to tell. The TWO keys of social media are this – Sharing your story and Building relationships. Who is the best specialty to do this? Family Medicine. Founded Doctor Anonymous blog 2006. Started blogging anonymously.
- Twitter. Facebook. Podcast. Sometimes I’m asked to do traditional television interviews.
- What is your social media footprint? I also tell students/residents to google themselves. In talking about physician rating sites…
- How to deal with negative reviews is beyond the scope of this talk….
- AMA has given very vague guidelines, but better than nothing at this point…
- AAFP has not released any guidelines for its members – yet. My hope is that AAFP build a sort of social media tool kit for its members to help with social media…
