Explorers (Ages 5-8) | September 21, 2020
Talk with your parent/caregiver, sibling, friend, or family member about
how you felt in each picture and why. Ask them if they have ever felt
the same and when it happened. If it was a difficult feeling like
sadness or anger, ask how they tried to deal with it. Ask if it helped.
Ask an adult to write down ways of dealing with difficult feelings and
posting it somewhere for everyone to see (like a refrigerator or wall in
a common area.
10 mins: Draw a picture of yourself four times throughout the day.
Label each picture with a feeling (or feelings). Include the experience
in each picture when the feeling happened each time. Experiences
could be just after waking up, during lunch, doing school work, reading
a book, playing outside with a sibling or friend, or getting ready for bed.
10 mins: Try to write short phrases that connect a feeling with an
experience (such as “happy to eat breakfast,” “sad to eat this food for
lunch,” “confused with what I smell cooking,” “excited to play with my
friend,” or “proud to read a new word”). An adult can help with words
that may be difficult when you provide the short phrase.
15 mins: Put the pictures and list of feelings on the wall and look at
the feelings in pictures and words. Write a sentence connecting the
pictures with the feelings. For example, “Today I felt happy because…”
or “I was upset because…” See the sentence starters on the activity
sheet.
Awareness: Emotional Self
Young children recognizing emotions and their causes is a base set of skills
that helps them develop ways to make thoughtful decisions. Here’s a short
video with more accessible language and explanations you might use as a
basis for helping your child understand difficult emotions and what to do
about them.

Social Emotional Learning Week 1 of 4: Aina Explorers (Grades K-2)

  • 2. Well-Being Explorers (Ages 5-8) | September 21, 2020 Talk with your parent/caregiver, sibling, friend, or family member about how you felt in each picture and why. Ask them if they have ever felt the same and when it happened. If it was a difficult feeling like sadness or anger, ask how they tried to deal with it. Ask if it helped. Ask an adult to write down ways of dealing with difficult feelings and posting it somewhere for everyone to see (like a refrigerator or wall in a common area. 10 mins: Draw a picture of yourself four times throughout the day. Label each picture with a feeling (or feelings). Include the experience in each picture when the feeling happened each time. Experiences could be just after waking up, during lunch, doing school work, reading a book, playing outside with a sibling or friend, or getting ready for bed. 10 mins: Try to write short phrases that connect a feeling with an experience (such as “happy to eat breakfast,” “sad to eat this food for lunch,” “confused with what I smell cooking,” “excited to play with my friend,” or “proud to read a new word”). An adult can help with words that may be difficult when you provide the short phrase. 15 mins: Put the pictures and list of feelings on the wall and look at the feelings in pictures and words. Write a sentence connecting the pictures with the feelings. For example, “Today I felt happy because…” or “I was upset because…” See the sentence starters on the activity sheet. Awareness: Emotional Self Young children recognizing emotions and their causes is a base set of skills that helps them develop ways to make thoughtful decisions.
